Newbe mycelium questions
    #439461 - 10/29/01 01:24 AM (21 years, 1 month ago)

I know I've posted a few times already, but this is my first time and I have many questions.

I'm using the basic PF procedure and I innoculated 6 days ago using PR spores from Sporeworks. My substrate is brown rice flour and vermiculite. I am keeping my half pint jars in a dark place in my house that is sometimes kind of cool - 65 to 68 degreees. So far I have something happening at the innocluation sites, but what I am seing are translucent splotches, they are not pure white and they are growing slowly. I don;t think it's cobweb because it's spreading so slowly. Is this normal? Also, aside from the temp being on the cool side, I suspect that my substrate may be a little dry. Is there any way to introduce more moisture after innoculation?

I love this forum, btw. You guys have been very helpful already. Thanks so much in advance.

I'm a newbie myself so I can't be sure, but I dont think that's a contaminant- especially since its only starting to grow at the innoculation points. I'd bet its just mycelium beginning to grow, so it's still really thin. In my case the jars got a really slow start and I was nervous for the same reason. Everything turned out ok in the end though!

Yeah, thats mycelium. Hmmm.. why would white stuff be growing at the site you innoculated fungus at? hmmmmm.. lol.. Anyway, alot of the time i find people mistaking mycelium for cobweb ( later on if theres mycelium in the verm top part alone; thats prob not cobweb, just a healthy mycelium culture).. yeah.. i probably would have written something useful, but im pretty tipsy

Best to let the jars see at least a little light (just a bit of normal room light) to prevent gray cob web mold from forming. (not that's it's very likely to happen in a jar, but it has been known to occur) I have known people to invest many hours only to throw out trays to cob web mold- a little light is all thats needed to kill it.

65-68 is too cold, you'll be waiting extra long for the cakes to fully colonize, try 80-85. my friend puts his on the back of his comp monitor takes 14 days allmost everytime to colonize, he uses pf but used bird seed water instead of regular water. At least thats what he tells me

With a half pint mine have colonized quicker then I thought possible(amazonian&tazmanian from spore works{prints}). However I had the same problem with pints it was suffication of my mycelium.

I think contams are a placebo
I was totally dirty when I set up my jars... and I breathed into them and took my time innoculating (i took the lids off to do it too lol)

Err the only bad thing is i have no mycelium either...
but no contams!

What if you opened to lid fairly quickly to let some air in?

It was definately the temp. I bought a heating pad, turned it on medium, placed an old sweatshirt on top and put the jars on top of that. Now my jars are cookin!

Thanks, everyone.

make sure you don't dry out the insides
I hear that can fuck you over... I imagine you might want to put a thin rag or something between the jar and the heating pad..but i dunno!

Im glad I got some growth now
