    #4434936 - 07/21/05 06:18 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

after going to 3 pet stores, i got a 8 oz bag of powdered oyster shells (pretty sure this is what i need and a bag of cockatiel gravel that has oyster shells and flaked charcoal. will both of these work and in what ratio should i ad it to a 50/50 (coir / vermiculite) casing? thanks for your help! (these were the only oyster shells i could at all three pet stores)

Most likely 5% by volume, i know this is the case with using calcium carbonate as a buffer.

Your best bet is to actually measure the PH of the mix. I wet mine done pretty good to help get a better reading. When you sterilize it will dry out to the right wetness.

I don't know about the flaked charcoal.. never used that.

Oyster shell is better for peat and not needed for coir and verm mix. Used it at first and found it a waste of time. These are verm and coir and are only a quart each with no oyster shell.

So you can use the shell but is it gonna really give a noticable help......I don't think your gonna see a difference.
