First time casing, no growth in 2 weeks. Help!
    #443510 - 10/31/01 08:35 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

It was my first time casing and i used 6 hlf pint jars, but the bin that i was using was a little to large so i had to do the best with what I had. I cut each jar into several one inch slices and placed them in the container. The problem was the cakes did not cover the entire surface area, so there were a few small spaces inbetween each slice. I cased it 2 weeks ago friday and I have not seen any growth through the top casing layer (50/50+ casing mix). My question is- have I not seen any growth yet because of the small spaces between the slices, or does it just take time. If it is because of the spaces can I expect to see any growth at all, or am I doomed not to see any growth because of my shortcomings?

As long as the rest of the factors are takin care of....misting temp., then I think you'll be ok. Just give it more time.

How thick was your casing layer?.... a half inch is plenty... you should see signs of mycelia poking through at day 7-10.. not sure why it`s taking so long..... did you cover the casing with foil and keep in the dark?, make sure the casing layer is moist enough too ....or not overly wet also.... just squeeze till you get a few drops and that`s just about right... otherwise just hang tight and be patient... you should see some mycelia poke through soon........ wait till the casing is about 50% colonized at least before you bring into the light and induce pinning...... good luck

make sure your temp is correct, make sure your casing layer is moist, might wanna dig up a lil and see if any contams are present. also did you add lime? if so how much, you could have added to much and messed up the ph of the casing layer

was the lime dolomitic? dolomitic lime will burn your mycelium and keep it from growing.... just a thought.
