Ok, simply put, I have EVERYTHING I need to start sterilizing the jars this evening... Was going to wait till the weekend, but I suppose I could boil jars as well as hand out candy. I have a pressure cooker, with no gauge! The gauge is broken. Here is my dillema. I'm new at this, a virgin actually * blush * and what I need to know is... How long should I leave the 1/2 pint jars in the pressure cooker to boil? Can I overdo it? Is that possible? will this be a problem? As I am going home shortly to begin, I would appreciate some advice! Thanks in advance Mycophiles!

If you are using the PF method with verm and BRF I would suggest 20-40 minutes, if your using rice I would suggest 40. I have been using PF method and usually do about 25 with no problems. Rice or Grain requires more time. If you leave it in there to long it will eventually dry out.

Acutually, yes, you can overdo it. It will result in a dried substrate that colonizes slow or not at all. Boiling jars for one full hour is recommended. You do not whant them at full heat the whole time as this will dry them out. Bring the water to a smooth boil and then lower down to a gentle boil. You shouldnt have too many bubbles.

I agree, at least one hour, 1.5 hours is what I do with my big pot-never had a problem. Slow boil like phro says. remenber to keep the glass from touching the pot.

Dont forget to put a wash cloth between the jars and the pot. This is to keep the jars from cracking. Just lay the wash cloth in the pot add the jars, and then fill the water up about 1/4 of the way. This is for a big pot (Pasturizing). 1 hour on low boil. With a lid.

Nice washcloth idea, never thought of that. He's already done sterilizing though.
