Battle of Rorke's Drift
    #4431011 - 07/21/05 01:14 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

This would definitely be an interesting read for those of you who are into military history or just a damn good story.

In January of 1879, a huge Zulu army rushed a the lightly-manned main supply depot of the British in southern Africa. Over 4,000 African natives armed with spears and rifles taken from the just-beaten British unit of thousands of men assaulted a makeshift fortification manned by a little over 100 troops, only 90 or so who were capable of firing a rifle. During the next 10 hours, over 1,000 Zulu's were killed, while only 17 British soldiers died.

I'm no fan of imperialism, but the courage shown by these less than 100 men is amazing. Before they fought the battle, they were passed by retreating British troops who had told them of the massacre that had occured miles away, and refused to help garrison the supply point. Also, once this bad news came, many of the infantrymen retreated as well, leaving no high-ranking officers and few soldiers with any battle experience.

Battles like this, and others (Alexander of Macedonia defeated the Persians though being outmanned 250,000 to 50,000 and still winning the battle) amaze me to no end. Today's war where men win wars by pressing a button to drop a bomb is a huge departure from how things used to be.

Are you serious? I'm reading a chapter in a book I'm reading about it, and I'm getting pumped up just reading it. Soldiers were an entirely different thing back then than they are now.

Whats the title of the movie?

It's called "Zulu", starring a much younger Michael Caine. A great, very under-appreciated movie, IMHO. You'll love it!

I just added it to my gf's online blockbuster queue. I've become a sucker for pre-modern battles. It's just amazing how different war is than it used to be.
