casing question

please forgive me if this question has been adressed (multiple times) but i am wondering what types of stores sell "powdered oyster shells" that SCATMAN recommends using in the casing layer? thanks for your help!

Look at pet supply stores in the bird feed section or the aquarium section.

Im kinda new to this area, but from what I understand oyster shells are added to control the ph levels in your casing... depending on what casing you are planning on using you may or may not need them...

thanks for the help guys i am doing a 50/50 casing (coir/vermiculite) and i understand for multiple flushes it is best to use a long-term buffer such as powdered oyster shells. correct me if i am wrong.

I use the crushed, not powdered, in my coir verm casings. Try feed stores.

so do i need the initial buffer(hydrated lime)? it seems like someone said that coir starts out nuetral. is this right? thanks :smile:

Right. You need lime with a peat based casing layer. Coir is neutral so you only need to add long term, if you choose. It really won't help any unless you make into a third or fourth flush. It counteracts the build up of mycelium waste.
