Another thing: Considering the possibilities of other levels of existence... Could the shadow people be something of an overlap of realms? Man... If it was daytime I'd probably be laughing about this now... shit. The logical brain is telling me it's imagination though...

Yeah, The Heat brings back memories. I used to go through all that pillow turning and stuff back in the day. I used to imagine that every part of me had to be under the blanket, and if my toe or something was to accidently stick out I would end up being dragged all the way out....

Ulysses, please elaborate more about seeing the figures...sounds coming from them....any information about the actual experiences with them.
If they are beings, which is very possible I guess.......don't accept them(if they are malevolent\"service-to-self"), don't fear them....they can't harm you if you don't let them.

I would not believe in shadow people but I have seen strange things myself, and I always say seeing is believing.

One night I was parked at a park with my girlfriend, just doing what people do at a park at night with their girlfriends. As we were leaving, I saw a figure darting from tree to tree. The figure was bipedal, but did not look human. It was also very large, larger than an average person. Even though there would have been enough light to see a normal person, the figure I saw was totally black.

Now I've seen some strange things but my girlfriend saw it too and described it as I did. We both said at once: "What the fuck is that!?" And fuck. Was it ever fast. It seemed to move around effortlessly and any time we looked right at it, it would jump away.

I've seen a lot of scary things, many of them come out of my own head. But this topped everything, we were both petrified and screamed out of that park as fast as possible.

About the actual people I saw... It's hard to say. When I was little I would always stare at things and find myself amazed at what they would do. Then in bed I would just lie there with my eyes open, gazing at not the wall or the fan or whatever, but almost through it. To this day I do that... just stare at nothing. Recently, I've been noticing the "shadow people" (I suppose) again. Until I read this post I wan't worried about them being malevolent... Anyhow, I'll just lay back in bed, zone out, and strange things almost immediately begin happening. I can definately see things moving aroung, very quick, but I can't really make out figures, ie: bipedal. I also start to visually hallucinate (the kind with the colors that seem to appear on your eyes...) and then I can't see anything anymore (I mean that, the colors block out pretty much everything in the dark) unless I blink them away. I sometimes write the shadows off as hallucinations like the colors, but there are differences. The colors just appear as shapes and things hovering there on my eyeballs, but the shadows are actually moving around in the room.
Once, in the colors faces began emerging, like silhouettes (where you can see eyes and cheeks etc. only through contrast...). They were very clear. They came looming out of the colors, and then melted away. This happened for a long time (before I went into the "trance" I looked at my watch. When I came "out" nearly an hour had passed. I figure at least half of that was the faces, probably more). I didn't recognize them, but they were definately faces. btw: I was sober at the time.
When I was small, seeing things like the shadows would have most definately scared the hell out of me...

If you have not seen the shadow people or any number of other things, or would like to see them better, try this:
Lay back in bed or on your couch or whatever (it should be dark, but being barely able to see things helps).
Open your eyes a little wider than normal (don't bug them out). This may not be necessary, but it seems to help.
Control your breathing so that you are calm.
Put yourself in a state of mind where you want to see things (not that you'll make them happen, but so that you're not afraid when the do appear).
Just zone out staring. You're not staring at an object, but almost in another dimension (like staring through or past your wall, but at the same time you're not really staring "that far", just kind of into the room). When I say "into another dimension" I don't mean dimension Zantar or something, but like the 4th dimension of perception...
Your eyes might hurt, especially if your house is really dry. If you blink them to get rid of the pain (it's a dry feeling really) they will hurt even more when you open them again. You might want to just give up and try another time.

Well, I can't guarantee this will work for you...

Another thing that works great: If you meditate, do that. Close your eyes and do your transcendal thing, then keep yourself in that state and open your eyes, its almost like you're seeing the residue of all those who came before you, or are existing elsewhere right now... I don't remember ever having much if any interaction with the shadows... There was one time when one came over and got onto my bed... it was kind of an androgynous elf creature, but I don't remember why this happened (I wasn't high but I don't think it was an actual elf...)
Well, if you feel like it, give that stuff a try.

Oh ya, one more hint: Try not to chase them around too much with your eyes unless they appear very clear. If you do you will probably lose them. It's best to almost wait for them to pass through you vision... Or so it seems.

I've seen invisible people before. But, they definately weren't shadows. I think seeing shadow people is a symptom of pschizophrenia.

Could be. Maybe there's a place for pschizoprhenia in this world though. I know really bad 'phrenia isn't fun... but there is something very powerful about it. There just isn't a place in our society for pschizophrenics, perhaps there will be one day. (I'm thinking of the book/movie dune, and those navigators... They once were people but through heavy "spice" use they become something very different, and are no longer suited to day to day life. They are however very powerful beings.)

Last night I laid in bed and played with focusing my eyes...4th dimensionesque toned over vision.....I saw BLACK shapes moving around, and one big ass one next to my bed with a big head....I started to get a little freaked out, plus I was very tired, so I pulled those sweaty covers over my head and cried myself to sleep.

when i was little i had a bird hanging from the roof near the end of my bed. if you pulled the string on it, it would gently flap its wings and move up and down. most nights i would look at it and i could see its silouette moving as if someone had pulled the string. but noone had. and the scariest part of my imagination was that i thought if i took it down it would get mad and come back to get me. so as a child for a few years i lived in mortal terror of the bird. and btw the only truely 2 dimensional thing that exists in the universe is a shadow. food for thought.

keepaskingtime- Are you serious? If so, I'm sorry to have caused you distress. ;) Do you consider what you saw to be real, or possible real? Or would you say it could have been from the suggestion... There is always a chance that it was a visual hallucination caused by the unfocosing of the eyes... But if we are both doing the same thing and getting honest results, I wonder... Has anyone else tried this? The fact that you were very tired could have played into it, but that doesn't necessarily mean it CAUSED it. For example: There are those who say drugs don't CAUSE hallucinations, but shift your vision, your perspective to allow you to see them.
I know in my case it isn't from the suggestion of the shadow people, like I said I've been doing the eye thing since I was a child... I did it again last night and I could definately see shapes moving around the room again, but not so clear as keepaskingtime saw. I did experience some of the same color related halucinations again (been seeing those since I was a child too, so it's not from too much tripping or something). I noticed last night that the light hallucinations counter the dark ones (they're kind of opposites...). Don't know wether to write them all off or not. Anyone else care to try and report back?

Oh hey man, I was serious about what I saw, but I was kidding about sweating/crying/freaking out. The shadows weren't very clear. The shape next to my bed was shaped like a figure whos outline was 2 ovals, one bigger(body) and one smaller(head). Very weird indeed.....I will try this again tonight.
real....not real......real........not real......real........well, I don't think I'm just making them up.

The best eye focusing technique I know is to do this: Relax your vision and stare at /nothing/. You'll notice the particular sense of 'tunnel vision' where you have a clear area right infront of you and a hazy area around your periphial vision. I've learned that you can 'peel' away the hazy area. You simply expand your visual field. Istead of staring at the screen of your computer for instance, try to stare at the entire expanse of your field of vision all at once with equal amounts of clarity. A Native friend of mine called this type of seeing 'absolute' vision. You're not looking at the specific object-to-object relationship your environment, but instead, the environment itself as unified thing. If you get this down, you can cause yourself to start to see more and more subtle patterns within your environment - and yes if you can maintain it long enough, you will begin to see visual disturbances (hallucinations). My Native friend used this method for tracking game, and I use it while in the forest myself to follow animal trails (if you have the opportunity to try this, I reccomend it).

Also, you can do the same thing to all of your senses - removing specific focus from a region or area and expand it outwards. Touch, hearing, smell..some are more localized to the body, but you get the general idea.

I post this because when I use this method of vision while laying in the dark, is see the same sort of colorful visual disturbances that were described above. Mine visual disturbance is blue - purple - red gradiation that usually 'explodes' out of the center of my visual field and expands to the edges of it. Once it reaches the very edge, the 'center' explodes again.

As towards seeing shadows, perhaps we should all become more aquainted with the notion of the dead existing with us. Christianity has it's purgatory, Buddhism has its bardo of the Hungry Ghosts. As I posted before, it is your own fear which is coloring theses experiences as menacing. Just as it is fear that keeps one from moving past the hallucinations of a trip to the further reaches beyond. Just as it is fear that causes the hallucinations, once they've caught you, to keep you bound up in a personal hell. Examine the significance of what these 'shadows' represent to you in a metaphorical context. The only thing which can quell fear is understanding. Once you understand the roots of your fear it will go away.

Ish

I agree Ishmael. I think we'r on the same page with this stuff (you've got the same visual things that I've got, with the colors and all). I wasn't worried about the "shadow people" until I read this, and then even that night when I watched again, my fear was gone. Only when I was a child was I truly afraid, and that had a lot to do with my nightmares as well. I mentioned above that they resembled some sort of residue or that they might be beings existing with us or on another level, perhaps parralel to us. I don't know if they are ghosts existing in our time, or in our world as we see it. I don't know if they are roaming around being ghosts and just existing as ghosts in our world, or if they are going around being whatever they are perhaps oblivious to us... Perhaps we are the same way, we are moving around on a biological level that they (or someone else, or no-one) are not seeing, or perhaps seeing only reflections of on particles of their environment which might be made up of the thing that fuels our dreams... or any possible thing you might be able to imagine. I don't know. I also doubt that what we are seeing is there to hurt us.
Remember when white people first saw Black people they were afraid. They were shocked because they didn't know something like that could exist. On this same note I'm sure that once you get used to seeing things you will not be afraid of them.

Oh well.

I've had some interesting developments on the shadow people front...
Anyone else? Did everyone give up on them? Moved on to greener pasteurs?
