Can I birth Yet? photos and ?'s
    #4427284 - 07/20/05 09:25 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I know I just posted 5 days ago, but since this is my first time growing , I'm not sure when the right time to birth is. Okay, here is the photos of 07/01/05 inoculated Blue Meanie Jars (photos this a.m. 07/20/05)

Is it time yet?

And here are photos of Golden Teacher Jars innocualted the same time 07/01/05.
And these photos were taken this a.m 07/20/05.

And are these ready yet?

I used the PFtek for Simple Minds to make these jars and am planning on growing cakes only for now.

Now I have some specific questions about what to use as a growing chamber. I hope someone can give me some advice. I have been on this site for about a month or more and studied all the growing teks , etc.

My only experience thus far with growing has been to bring home cow patties and I put them in grow chambers ( steilite and rubbermaid boxes with an inch layer of damp perlite on bottom)) -- I also put one in a glass aquarium. Although some of the mushrooms were deformed and stunted ( as I later found out by Greatone234 , that this happens when wild mushrooms are grown in indoor grow chambers )These were blue meanies .

Anyway, my patties produced about 4 flushes and I have now put them in outdoor patch.

So that was my first experiment with growing --point being is that -- what I found with the cow patties is that the two that I put into glass grow chambers did not fruit again. ( I know that there might have been other reasons than being in a glass container) This leads to my questions about what type of container, etc.
Can anyone offer any advice and suggestions on this plan?

1. Use these 20 gal. containers.

2. Burn holes on each side about 2 in. round and put in Polyfil as a filter (? is this necessary?)

3. Put perlite in a colander and soak and drain.

4. Put an inch layer of the perlite on bottom of tubs.

5. Birth cakes and place directly on the perlite.

6. Cover and mist daily. ( How many times?)

I know that there are a lot of variations , I just would like to know anyone's opinions as to whether or not, I am doing something way off or if there is a better way.

The next set of questions has to do with where to put my grow chamber.
I live in Southwest Florida and it is always hot and humid.

So, should
1.
I keep them inside, in a bathroom shower that I don't use.
The temp. in the shower stays between 78 deg. F. and 80 deg. F.

My house is very humid as you can see by these photos

Or
2. should I put them in my garage where the temp. range is between 80-95 degrees F. and is also very humid?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope you enjoyed the tour of my house-- and once again , any advice is greatly appreciated.

Oh, and by the way I haven't tripped in a long time ( 20 yrs or so) and I grew enough on those transferred patties to take with a friend. It was like doing qualudes (? sp) -- barbituate mushrooms. We were sooo relaxed and laughing -- not hallucianting though. LOts of laughs and slept great.

"Blue meanies" usually refers to Copelandia Cyanescens, not Cubensis.

And, for starters, forget all about fruiting in that hot garage. Temps for fruiting Cubensis is 74F-78F.

How long have those jars been completely colonized everywhere you can see?

It's been said to wait some days after the colonization appears complete, just to make sure that the centers are colonized.

2. is not something you have to do... manual fanning will do sufficiently.
3. #3 is unnessecary
4.perlite is used as a wick for moisture. just place in the bottom of the container and add water until you reach half the height of the perlite. that creates the wick effect.
5. place your cakes on a piece of tin foil. placeing the cakes directly on the perlite will cause the cakes to become waterlogged/overhydrated.

They have been colonized all the way around the jar since 07/15/05.

What is dunk and roll? -- I still haven't figured that one out.

Thanks for the tip on the perlite and where to put my grow chambers-- obviously, it would be my bathroom-- and not my hot garage.

Also, I am aware of what Blue Meanies are and the photo is a deformed photo of Copelandia that grew from a cow pattie that had this growing outdoors
and yes I am aware that I am holding this with my bare hands. I did wash and sanitize my hands afterward/. I was stoneed and didn't realize I was holding it without gloves until I looked at the photos.
Thanks everyone.

A dunk and roll is simply submerging a cake in water for 12-24 hours in distilled water. Just open the jar, remove the dry verm, then pour water in until the cake is floating just above the top of the jar, then push it down with the lid and screw it on so the cake is pushed down completely into the water.

Don't dunk more than 24 hours though, it may start to rot.

After that, take it out, roll the cake around a bit in vermiculite so the cake gets covered in the verm (dry verm should stick to the wet cake), and then birth it!
