fanning inside the fruiting chamber?
    #4426708 - 07/20/05 03:59 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hi.

Do you know that it's a good idea to set a pc fan inside the fruiting chamber and not too close to the casings? I think it will improve the air exchange because CO2 remains in the bottom.

As the humidity is high, do you think this air could dry the casing layer?

Thanks in advance.

I think the bubble stones and an air pump would work better.

Yea a PC fan is cheap, but it would just dry out the chamber.

I haven't tried one, but I read that it actually brings the humidity down.

Seems reasonable since the whole thing is enclosed as long as it doesn't blow right on the casings.

Perhaps connecting it to less than it's usual voltage would make it run just slow enough to move air around but not too much.

Bad idea! This will cause excess drying of the casings surface which will lead to poor pinsets, pins that don't mature, overlay and a casing that dries out quickly. All in all not what you want, what you want is FAE (FRESH AIR EXCHANGES). GL

I would just use it for your FAE's. When you want to fan it out, just lift the lid on your GC for a little and plug in the fan. You would only need to do it for less than a minute and you'd be set. Unplug the fan when you're done. This might help reduce chances of any type of contam falling into the GC because the lid would still be mostly covering it and there would be some positive pressure. If you want the GC to be more in "autopilot" mode you may want to go with a PMP.

You know I was actually about to post something very similar to this until I read yours. I was thinking about installing the fan in the side of a PMP with a tyvek filter and just turning it on when I needed air exchange. Probably would take too long and fanning would be better. But I never did figure out if you have to be as paranoid with sterility when fruiting as when you're innoculating or if the need lessens in the different stages of growing.
