Poll: First timer success stories?

How many of you got at least something edible and decently potent your first time growing? I'm not talking mass quantity but enough that you could call it successful.

Less of a complex setup, and more alot of reading, but I chose that anyway. Read like you've never read before and chances are very good youll succeed.

LOL trust me I've been reading so long it hurts. I didn't think I really had a grasp on it then I started explaining it to a (trusted) friend and I realized I know more than I thought.

I have no experience growing anything really, but the directions aren't too hard and it almost seems to good to be true...we'll see how they turn out!

I started with grain (WBS), and now I would never even consider growing a cake.
As far as I'm concerned, cakes are recommended by other people for first timers/noobs, but cakes can be bypassed completely by anyone with a lick of sense and a halfway decent scientific approach.

Yeah, I think most first timers are intimidated by casings when they hear about overlay, misting, contams, etc. PF jars just seem a whole lot easier until you realize that grains, poo, etc don't really require that much more work and drastically increase yields.

Yes. I mean, preparing the grain jars is even easier than making cakes IMO. Soak, simmer, load, PC. No mixing ingredients even.
Then the only difference is that you have to layer your casings, but that is not all that difficult. If you have read enough and you know when to patch, when to initiate pinset, how to mist, and a few other assorted details you're all set.
Someone could study hard for 3 days and do it.
And as far as contams, I'm from the school that says that if you're getting a lot of contams from one method, you're probably gonna get it from another too.
Check under the bed for the moldy sandwich from last year. lol
My next endeavor will be going on a horsepoo hunt. I found 14 stables in my area mwahahahaha!

my first grow was a kit that got me 30 grams dry
my first grow from scratch was about 18 grams dry, using pf BRF 1/2 pints, spawned to tennstud poo, into a rubbermaid chamber with perlite, manual fan a few times a day

I had a somewhat complex setup my first time, and I only say that because I went through all the trouble adding terrarium stages and a resistor to the ultrasonic humidifier I used, which really wasn't that complex, just a pain in the ass. Success was minimal, 4.55g dry off the only cake I had that survived. I attribute that to not using a pressure cooker.
Still, half of that was enough for me to trip to level 3, my friend tripped to level 3 as well.
I'm eagerly awaiting harvest of my first casing.

yeah but "first grow" could mean anything.
My first wbs pint jar casing got 20g dry first flush.
My second quart WBS casings first flush is still drying but should be about triple that.

1st time, steamed PF Cakes, 50% failure, 3 out of 6 jars made it I cased the 3 that made it, and had pretty good success, then after a few flushes spawned the casings to h-poo.. They've been flushing, then getting spawned to more h-poo ever since! I haven't lost 1, (gave two away though

Well I'm pretty happy with the poll results so far...grain sounds like a good medium to work with so I'll give it a try once I see how my first batch turns out.

i'm a total newb and i find that i read the same threads a lot, because as i learn more i'm able to understand more. and yes it does help to want to know the rhyme and reason behind what you are doing. and also to explain it to someone else, as some of you mentioned, because it helps get things straight in your mind. just be careful who you talk to. hah. i saw my first little burst of white myc today so i'm feeling good.

First grow was a success with the Colorado strain using the PF Tek cake method. So far have yielded 59 grams so far and still counting. Flushed about 2-3 times and they get bigger after dunks. The past 3 weekends have been fun lol.

I did lots of reading for my first grow and did basic BRF cakes. They did okay. My second grow I moved on to bulk substrate spawned with grains. It spawned okay, got fully colonized, then all 3 of them were hit by trich :'( Then I tried 3 casings on the whim with no positive outcomes, didn't do what I was supposed to... just sorta threw them together in depression after my bulks failed. Right now I put the time into building them a greenhouse, have jars colonizing, and am going to try plain grain casings. Next time I'll spawn some poo.
