swamp hunt with pics
    #4424585 - 07/19/05 07:12 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

My hunting was limited to a very small area of the woods in my back yard that are not too good for finding mushrooms. The vast forests lay beyond the swamps. The only thing is, I couldn't get past the swamp because it was way too flooded and overgrown.
Once I do make it past, this is when the REAL hunting begins.
Anyways I did manage to find a few things but nothing like I will once I get past the swamp. This tiny part of the woods lacks all kinds of species that lay beyond.

Lots of multi-color capped russula species were found.

A pretty interesting little group of coprinus specimens.. the size and nature of them made them very difficult to photograph in their habitat, hence the blurry photos.

This lone specimen was very beat up and falling apart. I believe that it is a specimen of the gilled bolete however. The gills had a distinct blue bruising to them (which may not be all that visible in the pics however).

Even though Conocybe lactea is common all over the place, I was bored enough to try and make some good quality photos of them - which is not easy considering the size of them.

This is a pretty looking blue bruising bolete species with a dark colored spore print.

Here's a pic of the boletes and red russulas growing together on a sandy creek edge.

This is just an interesting little group of lbms that I didn't even bother picking.

Also found a couple different species of Amanita but this species in particular is beautiful.

Here is this polypore that grows on wood of which I am unable to obtain a spore print. The name will come to me in time, I remember trying to ID these before.

these ones got taken over by some kind of host mold.

Well it was pretty disappointing that I was not able to get back to my regular trails and spots but I got a few pics at least.

Just so you know, there are over 200 species of boletus, and most of them are edible, the choicest being the King Bolete.. OR 'Boleteus Edilus'(sp?)
There ARE some poisonous ones though, none deadly... A rule of thumb is if it bruises a different color, it's not good for eating. It's best to stick to the ones used for gourmet purposes.

Nice pics.

Oh ya, 'edible' does not mean it will taste good.
Happy hunting :sun:

Thanks guys, I will have many more to share tomorrow once I am able to get back into my good spots.
I won't repost pics of the same species.
I had some trouble narrowing down that bolete and the polypore to genus.

Ok, I think that the polypore is Polyporus elegans or possibly even Polyporus badius. There are also probably similar species but that would require a microscope to differentiate.
The sources say edible but too hard to eat. These things are hard and rubbery as a car tire.

Also narrowed the boletes down to what appears to be either Boletus bicolor or maybe B. sensibilis... exact species ID's are not usually reliable without microscopes, chemicals, or a mycologist.
