slug bait toxicity...
    #4424501 - 07/19/05 06:56 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

Is there anything in slug bait that would be toxic to mycelium? Also, would mushrooms growing from substrate containing slug bait be toxic to humans?

Thanks guys.

Stamets' work with bioremediation shows that of all the toxins, only heavy metals end up in the fruitbodies. Oyster mushrooms grown on diesel spill sites and PCB spills had no traces of said contaminants in them. I wouldn't worry about slug bait.

Ya have to speak in specifics, as to what the bait is, as each company could be different.Id hate to say it is ok and be wrong. If it is toxic to humans, it should have a listing on the sack. If you do get a chemical name, you could call the local poison control center, they could look it up.

Lots of older bait contains metaldahyde. Some of it can't be shipped to a bunch of states (including Utah, where atomic waist residue and Sarin gas is ok!) Most of the newer stuff has iron phosphate and apple and bran for attractors. From the warning lables on the old stuff, I would not use it around my place for ANY reason, mushrooms or not. I'd rather do the beer bit! (it is soooo cool! The slugs in their lederhosen, rocking back and forth, clinking stines.....)
