Are these mushrooms the real deal? (pics)
    #4424205 - 07/19/05 05:40 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, I'm new to shroomery and would like some help making sure that the mushrooms I've got are indeed cubensis.

Okay, I live in west Tennessee, and a friend who knows a little less than me about identifying mushrooms picked these. They're somewhat fresh, a little over a day old ATM. They were stored in an outdoor shed in a box with a paper bag placed over them.(That's not bad, is it?) They came from a house out in the country very near a small pond. They grew under trees(type unknown). The trees were tallish and thin. It was about 2 days after 2 days of raining.

I would give an accurate description of the mushrooms themselves but the pictures should cover anything I could think to say already.

If any physical descriptions such as smell/texture etc. are needed I'll be glad to quickly reply with answers as best as possible. If a spore print is needed I will upload a picture of it. I'm not sure what color the mushrooms bruise, maybe an experienced person could tell from the pics.

If any pics are needed for something specific, I can do it.

and finally, I'll add this. These mushrooms were in a box with 3 other mushrooms that looked nothing like them. 2 of them were much larger and brown, and the other was reddish. These all had mold on them, so I threw them out. None of the others had any mold that I could see but I still fear that being near the others could harm them. I just don't know enough. I checked the others thoroughly for mold and saw none.

Advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

(sorry my pictures aren't great.)

None of those look anything like Psilocybe cubensis. Sorry.

Your friend should do some serious research. Cubes grow on cow/horse manure. If you don't know that (even people who hate mushrooms and would never do them know that), then you got some problems.  :nonono: :shake: :foreheadslap:

This sight has many great resources, everything you need to know about mushrooms is here (or is linked to here).

Good luck, and happy shrooming!  :mushroom2:

Dont look like cubies to me either, I can see how you mix them up, resemble, but dont look like the real deal.

Not cubensis at all, the spores on the stem are all kinds of colors...

Not even close, you need to check cow manure, you wont find them anywhere else.

Alright guys, thanks for the information. I'm going to go on my first hunt later this week and will come here with the results.

(hopefully I'll do better than my friend. I've been doing a lot of reading since he gave me those.)

Good luck man, keep your eyes open and hopefully you will stumble across some of those delicious golden beauties. Be sure to bring your finds back here for a proper ID before anyone thinks about consuming. Have fun and watch out for those po's.
