Canadian government insurance

Quote:

The Consumers Association said its national study of auto insurance rates showed that the average auto insurance rate in Ontario is $2,383 a year, compared with $1,324 in B.C., where auto insurance is run under the auspices of a Crown corporation.

The group described the study as the largest independent survey ever conducted in the Canadian industry.

"Consumers in Ontario have been clearly harmed by outrageous price increases for auto insurance over the past three years," consumers association president Bruce Cran said.

Quote:

He said those hurt in car crashes have also been affected by the Ontario government's decision to impose a $30,000 deductible on benefits paid out, meaning "innocent victims of crashes have suffered at the hands of the insurance industry while this industry continues to put billions of dollars of profits in its pockets."

Seems to me that in at least some cases socialism can provide for the people better than corporatism.

That certainly is not a free market operating there. Your are right in calling it corporatism.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada painted a dramatically different picture of the auto-insurance industry in Ontario. The bureau argued that its own calculation showed the average auto premium in the province is $1,279, down 15 per cent from late 2003.

It reached that number by dividing total premiums paid by the number of insured vehicles on the road in Ontario

Quote:

The IBC report also argued that the Ontario system is working in favour of drivers in other ways. For example, Mr. Yakabuski said, the average claims payout in Ontario is $8,878, compared with $2,391 in B.C.

Quote:

Mr. Yakabuski countered that discounts offered to customers with more than one car in the family, rewards for being a loyal customer or lower rates offered to people who hold home insurance policies with the same company were not taken into account.

"That's the real cost that people pay for insurance which Mr. Cran has failed to demonstrate," he told the wire service. "The price of auto insurance has declined by a very significant amount... by almost $200 per vehicle in the past 18 months, the average price paid by car drivers here in Ontario."

No where in the article did it mention underwriting costs which are affected by accident rates, costs of repairs, types and ages of vehicles and other factors in the areas being compared nor did it mention the driving records of the average person being insured.

It's a fact that the insurance rates in BC are considerably cheaper than most provinces.

Wow, I pay $1,014 (US) for two cars, a 2005 Ford Freestyle (full coverage) and a 2001 Ford Focus (minimum coverage). You must still be a youngin'.
