chalk
    #4422993 - 07/19/05 12:35 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

my last casings got hit with trich so to try and prevent that from happening again, im going to use caco3 in the form of chalk to try and bring the ph up to closer around 6 or 6.5. I'm using the 50/50 peat moss tek so it would be nice if someone has done this before and knows a recipe which would work out well.

bonus: i learned recently that ph is a french phrase that stands for power of hydrogen. good to know.

The pH should actually be 7-7.5 but adding 5% POWDERED oystershells, egg shells, calcium carbonate, limestone or chaulk to your peat, then adding your verm should do you ok. I usually eyeball it myself. Make sure you arent talking regular blackboard chaulk (gypsum, calcium sulfate, not the right thing).

I didnt know what pH stood for, interesting...

It might say on the package? It would take carful looking most likly to find the right kind of chaulk. Personally I just pick up Pulverized Limestone from home depot for 2 bucks a bag (50 pounds)...so far in my year of growing many a mushroom, I've only used maybe 20 pounds...

2.5% of the total mixture, 5% of the peat moss.

Yes, but be carful crushed isnt the same thing and wont do you the same good, You want POWDERED or PULVERIZED. A flour, or at least salt like consistancy. If you use crushed, try to break them up more, or use more of them (less surface area on a cup of crushed, as opposed to a cube of powdered, since there are less peices of shell.
