Once I have cakes ready to be birthed...

I plan to setup a terrarium consisting of an air pump/humidifier:
http://sporeworks.com/xcart/catalog/Trop...p-p-16262.html So all I have to do is prepare the aquarium (10 gal) w/ the perlite and water, hook up the apparatus to the aquarium, run it for a while, then place the cakes inside?

From my experience, Perlite isn't actually necessary when a humidifier is implemented. It isn't going to hurt anything with both though; It's always good to back up your humidifier, because a lot of brands aren't always reliable.

I wanted to use the perlite as at least a lining or something...can i really just put the cakes into the glass bottomed aquarium if a humidifier is hooked up to it?

I would go ahead and use not even 1/8 of an inch perlite and don't put hardly any water in it. If something goes wrong with your humidifier, add to the perlite and you're set. Mist it if it gets dry. don't put them directly on the glass aquarium. Bend out some wire mesh to make a pedastalfor the cakes, so the are not directly getting wet. Also, don't mist the mushrooms directly try use a plexiglass drip shield and mist that.
