Dust in the Wind...

Sometimes, when the conditions are just right, a few billion individual grains of dust will come together and form something new...something that is "more" than the sum of all those grains. Something that, while its constituent parts existed before, did not itself "exist" until the conditions were right and the grains came together. Something that is entirely "unlikely" to exist...when all we look at is the grains themselves.
Thus a dust devil comes to life. It twirls around, seemingly at random (obeying its own "free choice"), perhaps picking up some small leaves or rubbish along the way.
Then, always, it comes to an end. The conditions change, no longer able to support it. As quickly as this dust devil came into being, it collapses and ceases to be. The parts, the grains, do not cease to exist...but the larger whole, the "dust devil", does not exist any longer.

I close my eyes Only for a moment, then the moment's gone All my dreams Pass before my eyes, a curiosity Ducks in the wind All they are is ducks in the wind
Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Ducks in the wind All we are is ducks in the wind, ohh

One of my favorite songs. Our garage band used to play it. We really sucked. But we had fun.
