Maggots in horse poo
    #4422349 - 07/19/05 06:03 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I got some horse poo I've been trying to dry out for a couple weeks now, but its been raining almost every day. The poo has stayed wet this whole time and now has maggots in it.

Will these hurt anything once the poo finally dries out? I would think at the least the pasteurization process would keep it from hurting anything, but I've never run into this problem before.

Thanks for any help  :mushroom2:

Never seen fly maggots in h/poo. Odd. They will leave - or die when you dry it out. Sadly, I don't know what effect they may have.

Are you sure they are maggots?
I've seen white grubs in some screened horse poo I had out in the sun drying.

It seems like if it were to sun dry, that would bake it and kill whatever is inside of it. Of course that is if it is as hot where you are as it is here.

I doubt it gets to 165 (pasteurizing temps) in the sun, no matter where you are.

It wouldn't get that hot!:dumblol: I'm not saying it will sterilize it. It wouldn't have to get thet hot to kill maggots. But if it got hot enough to dry it all throughout, it seems like that would kill maggots. They can't live completely dry. Anytime my outside garbage gets maggots we rinse it out and the maggots on the ground dry out and die. If they are dead from heat and his poo has aged it doesn't seem like it woud hurt anything after sterilizing it. If it were infested with them I think I would be too grossed out to try !though :drool2:

In all the years that I have been using horse poo...I have never seen maggots in any.

I don't think they will stick around after the horse poo dries out.

They could very well be grub worms. Someone pointed them out to me the other day. There are also these red pellet looking egg things in groups under some spots of the wet poo.
I'll get some pics of the little suckers.
Damn I wish it would quit raining.

Here is a couple. They aren't as white as they were. Its been sunny and hot today and the poo is beging to dry out. Maybe they'll go away.

Here is a couple more. The arrow points to one of those red pellet egg things.

When it dries, I'll probably break it up and screen it good, so that'll probably remove them anyway.
I just want to know what the hell they are

Thank god.

I think I could live without seeing a picture of maggots running around in horse poo.

I had some infested my garbage bin once.  Bastards took forever to go away.  You wash it down really good, and they just come back from nowhere in about 5 minutes.  I finally baked them in the hot sun and it did kill them.

That disgusting sweet smell they put off too is a smell that sticks in your nostrils for days.:puke:

Anyway, I bet you are glad they are grubs.

Good Luck

I'm with you, Clutch. I've belted limbs to stop gushing blood and killed & handled rodents etc etc but I CANNOT STAND even knowing there are maggots on the other side of the garage. Larvae in general ruin my day. I had some larvae growing in a flower bead and sacraficed the flowers by dumping a gallon of gas in it to kill the damn maggots! arg!!! And I just replaced my garbage cans because of the bastards too!

Too much negative energy, oddly very rare for me, just bugs with no or too many (millipede, anyone?) legs

There is nothing worse than going through the Asian parts of town.

All the rotten Veggie matter that they throw away...maggot land!~

Open the can and see a maggot colony in the can during the summer months is a given.

just plain nasty!~
