What would be the least amount of time....
    #4420139 - 07/18/05 05:47 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

...that you would soak wild birdseed, before simmering and loading into jars?

The reason I ask is I want to begin PCing jars soon so I won't be up all night PCing, but I will stay up all night if I have to, if that's what it takes to not fuck up a whole box of jars.

(the seed started soaking at noon today)

So what is the minimum soaking time for WBS in order to be reasonably assured of ending up with sterile jars please?

(Soaking at about 78F)

Thanks!!

O.K. but what is the minimum time?

I'm not tired and I'm thinking of starting at midnight after 12 hours soak time, would 12 hours soaking at 78F be sufficient to have germinated all of the bacterial endospores?

(Either way I'm gonna simmer a half an hour anyway for H20 absorbtion.)

Don't sweat the endospore thing too much, it's way too overused around here.  I've soaked for 6 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, and no hours with WBS...with success.  :mushroom2:

Diver hit the nail on the head. As a general rule I soak by filling a pot with WBS and adding water until it covers about an inch. Over the next 4-5 hours the WBS will soak up moisture and the water line will now be below the top. I continue doing this until no more water can be absorbed. Usually about 12 hours.

Thanks for backing me up.  If I never saw the word "endospore" around here again, it would be too soon.   I don't even soak anymore, straight to a large pot, medium boil for 30 mins, and P.C.  No reason to do any more work than you have to, as WBS is very user-friendly and forgiving.

I always have your back Diver.

Simmering performs the same function as soaking, just in a fraction of the time. I definitely agree that simmering is the way to go. I wonder if you could even cut your PC time down with simmering?

The WBS is already hot and will quickly reach the PC temps. I smell an experiment.

I don't soak wbs. I did with rye but I don't like rye. I simply simmer it. It will absorb enough water that way. I have never soaked wbs and I have a very low contamination rate.
