What to do with 80% colonized cakes?
    #4420075 - 07/18/05 05:29 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

AFOAF has various sized jars all showing the same problem in the incubator. They all seem to stall around 80-90% and will not colonize the bottom of the jars. Whether its BRF, WBS Flour, or WBS Grains, 1/2pint, pint, or quart, they just wont keep going. Some of these have been stalled for almost 2 weeks and he is fed up. Tried flipping, fanning, waiting but nothing works.

Would it be successful to case 1/2 colonized quart jars?
Would it be successful to case 80% colonized cakes?
Are there any extra precautions one would take if the above was done?

You can case 80% jars, just cut the uncoloized part out.GL

2 way sto make them unstall.

1-hold the cake over a hepa filter and do a forced air exchange

2-hold the jar upside down tap on the bottom untill the bottom isnt touching the jar and place back in incubator on its lid

What if the only thing One has is verm? Lets say he had no filter no tyvek on the lid or polly-fill. Then would it still be Ok to flip the jar?

If the other things don't work to finish the colonization...Gob has it right IMO. I did that with a batch awhile back....had GT's that were only 75-80 percent colonized...I just broke off all the uncolonized sub and then broke up the colonized and cased it to 50/50. It worked great.

This is a sad day. Turns out they were colonizing so slow because the top thin layer was an aqua mold (very thin attaching a layer of verm to the cake, there were tiny craters of blue/green mold in the cake. We had three people identifying it and turns out I am more colorblind than I thought (unless they were just hallucenating). It wasn't a lot of mold so AFOAF broke up 3 cakes and made a super small casing.

if you can see mold on the cakes, that means most likely the mold mycelium has spread throughout the entire cakes. You should separate the casing from everything else at the least, and in my opinion, throw it out.

IME if the myc wont colonize the bottom fast if not at all, the bottom can be dry. so i incubate in a humid incubator.

it heps jars from drying out....

I would throw out the moldy cakes----OR when they grow only use them for personal consumption seeing how the mold could have a bad effect on someone. Also keep them in a seperate room from any other materials.
