Quick PMP Sterilization Question

Just got my PMP built and it got up to 99%+ (my hygrometer reads "HI" above 99%) within 30 minutes of putting in the hydroton without even turning on my air pump.



By the way, you can pick up a combo hygro/thermometer at wal-mart for 14.99. Digital, with backlit face, runs on a AAA battery. Not sure if it's all-weather though.

Anyhow, to my question... Is it necessary for me to sterilize the bin (wash it out with bleach/water) or the hydroton before I birth my cakes in there? Seems like I recall reading about boiling the hydroton, but I don't know if that's the most efficient way, since I have about 15 liters of the stuff that I would need to sterilize.

On that note, is the point of putting the cakes onto a lid to keep them from coming into contact with the hydroton?

my friend always boils all the hydroton in his PMP before using and then about once a month or so. you can a big stock pot to boil the hydroton in, or you could do it with a propane burner outside ala pasturizing straw, that way you could do it in one boiling.

you should also wash the tub out with bleach water before putting the hydroton in. and make sure to add some h202 to the water or it will contam easier.

With Perlite I've read that a couple of glugs of Hydrogen Peroxide (in your water) will sterilize it

i just wipe my PMP down with 91% alcohol and boil the hydroton yu will be glad you did
