im gonna use just fine grade vermiculite. Anyone know a good ratio for water to vermiculite? all together i need about 7 cups vermiculite, how much water should be added before sterilizing for a good casing.......

Until you reach field capacity. When you squeeze a handful, it only starts to drip a couple drops.

What I hear is mix enough water to soak the stuff then drain all of the standing water. You want to squeeze a few drops out of a handful, but not much more.

Edit: Shown up by Hippie Chick. I will win one of these days!

maybe a strainer. i didn't have any probs w/ standing water though. i filled 3 jars. one with water the other w/ peat moss, and the other w/ verm. then i put them all in a bowl, add a little (very little) lime and oyster shell, and my secret ingredients. mix together, and place into 2 jars (yes, it will fit if you make it). a little pc'ing, let it cool and there you go.

#1 fine verm will make a suffocating casing and will give you very poor results. (FACT)

like hyphae said, you'll get bad results with fine grade verm alone.

i'd suggest mixing with coco coir or peat moss for better results.

Yes, but not fine verm. You want coarse vermiculite...its larger chunks won't clump as much and suffocate the caseing.

I would just leave the fine verm on there. I have used fine grade verm with decent results. As long as you keep it as fluffy as possible, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Coarse verm does work better though, due to being more "airy".
