yer well its pretty much like the 60 40 so u will have similar results i suspect.
like who honestly measures out exactly 60% verm and 40% coir, i just chuck it together and go hmm yer looks good to me, more than likely its closer to 50/50.

Is that not 120%? Anyway, I'm just teasing. I'm thinking about doing 50/verm and 50/coir. Cause Verm alone is too porous. Best of luck.

a PH buffer is not usually needed w/ coco coir.

I prefer this recipe.

1 cup verm
1 cup peat moss
1 cup coco coir
1/2 Tsp. agricultural lime.

I use "Jiffy Mix" for a casing. It is pretty much a 50/50+ mix of peat/verm + lime for a buffer. You don't need to add anything to it except moisture. I sterilize mine in the microwave, but I know people that don't even do that and don't have any problems. If you don't have the time/means/patience to make your own casing mix, try this stuff. I have been using it for a while now and it works great! I don't know why it isn't talked about more here on the forums. I buy mine at Walmart in the garden dept. I have seen it at Home Depot and other stores too. Try this stuff... It's GOOD!

Use 1 brick of coir/8 cups of vermiculite and a PH buffer. I use 2 heaping tablespoons of hydarated lime for this mixture. This mixture gives me 2 casing layers. And yes, coir needs to have the ph level a bit high (8) for the prevention of mold growth. Coir is a trich magnet in most cases if not buffered. In your case use 4 tablespoons of shells for the mixture.

Peat moss works better but is more hassle. It depends what you are looking for, ease or yields.

Coco coir works better without a buffer. So yes, its a good thing to add. The CRUSHED oyster shells wont do you as much good as the calcium carbonate...powdered, or better-pulverized, oyster shells (or limestone) or calcium carbonate are all the same thing and will all work great, more surface area per volume touching the casing surface then with crushed oyster shells.

So powdered=pulverized oystershells=limestone=calcium carbonate

and

crushed any of the above=much less useful.

As said though coir doesnt NEED one, I still would always add one when working with it, and peat moss does better as a casing ingredient instead of coir.

Just be carful you dont add to much (or any) hydrated lime, as you can burn your shit up, and I hear the recipe may have a bit much listed. Yes remove sticks and twigs. Not really nessesary, and you dont have to, but they COULD contaminate and it makes spreading the casing layer and getting an even pinset more difficult. I like my textures of my substrate and casing mixes to be perfect..fluffy, moist, airey, fiberous.

Man i've had mega probs with airborne spores landing on unbuffered coir. Maybe it's the luck of the draw though. Different coir bricks; once hydrated, will show different ph ranges on strips for different bricks. A wide variety of ranges between bricks, but almost all acidic ph balances.

That's why peat is really reccomended over coir. A casing layer shouldn't be nutritious at all like coir is. But I do indeed love coir as a casing layer and i'd reccomend it to anyone.

I dont think I've ever seen a contaminate attack my coir casing layer, before the substrate...

That's strange. I will get small spots of trich right on top of the casing layer. They're easily removed before sporulataion with a spoon, but does get old putting divets in my casing layer. LOL
