It's a djembe, and it's really cool. Now if I could only figure out how to play it

Awesome! Djembes rock!
They have three basic tones - Bass, Tone, and Slap
bass - hit the middle of the drum with the base of the palm
tone - hitting right outside the rim
slap - fingertips hitting the rim
here's a decent site - http://www.larryswanson.com/drum-and-dance/djembe-technique.htm

www.djembe.net
lots of info and notated rhythms.
btw, notated rhythms are great for programming into drum sequencers. there are groups of rhythms that are designed to work together.

Practice by yourself... but playing in a drum circle can help you improve a LOT! And people will help you out learning new things if you are a beginner.

did another google on that bad boy. eight holed double reeded wind The sound of the shehnai is considered particularly auspicious. For this reason it is found in temples and is an indispensable component of any North Indian wedding. very cool.

djembes are fucking rad.
they can be a subtle tool or VERY powerful in the circle.
those high rim notes also alow for some fun flurries.
