hairy nightshade?
    #4415272 - 07/17/05 05:15 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

a quick question..

i can't seem to find info on this paticular kind of nightshade, the white/yellow flowered "hairy nightshade", my question is, is it active with atropine alkaloids like the related species?

thanks

You're way too unclear to make a positive ID.

But a hairy cream-colored purple-veined flower is produced by Henbane (Hyoscyamus niger) which does contain hyopscyamine but to a lesser extent than say Datura.

click click click

I mean the nightshades identical to this one,

the one pictured there, it's henbane, wiccan_seeker?

i'm not trying to make a feild identification, but simply this nightshade i would be interested in getting some seeds and growing to add to my small garden, my plan is to get all the active nightshades/datura's/henbane/mandrake etc etc..

See, i've got a patch of those, except they're spiky S.O.B's.
Like, they've got spikes down the center of the leaf, both sides.
But it's an EXACT replica of that, otherwise.
Haven't been able to get a concrete I.D. as of yet.

This looks like a Solanum-family nightshade. These contain things like Solanine which heva a steroidal glycoside structure. They are poisonous but might get you dizzy. If its a Solanum (and I think it is) its nowhere near the major species that contain tropane alkaloids.

Looks a bit like a Solanum niger -- Black nightshade. Well known Solanums are the potato and the tomato, horribly poisonous plants with edible tubers and fruits, however.

Yeah, "black nightshade" was what I thought when I saw that.

The phrase "active with atropine alkaloids" makes me shudder, and I've never even experienced them! Travel with great care....
