Your opinion of the national news media?

Out of pure curiosity, I'd just like to know what everyone's opinion of the national media is. I'm asking specifically about your opinion of prime time television news shows that air on the major networks every night, which I believe is the most popular form of news distribution in the USA. Do you think they provide a balanced presentation of the issues that are affecting our country and the world, or do you think they focus on things that cause concern among the public (scare tactics) in order to gain an authoratative presence? Maybe you even think our government has an influence on the media?Whatever your opinion, I'd like to know. I think it would be an entertaining discussion!

I think primetime news shows exactly what the American public wants to see, which is murder, car crashes, kidnappings, and scandals.

Couldn't you also argue that the public wants to see those things because that's what it has come to expect from years of watching those things on the news? In that case, isn't the national news doing an incredible disservice to its viewers? Personally I can't even watch prime time news anymore because of how sensational it has become. There's always a new "threat to society" or a threat to your life personally that they blow out of proportion. And when those threats are later debunked, you don't hear them apologize for getting everyone worked up about it. I think it's irresponsible and they are much more focused on attracting viewers so that they can make more money than actually reporting relevant news.

Nah, people love being on the edge of their seat. They always want to be in the front row to see disaster. That is why traffic slows down to a snail's pace on the expressway while passing a wreck, even if no lanes are blocked. People love death and destruction.

So it sounds like you're saying that the prime time news we have today is entertainment and that in order to get the real news, we have to look elsewhere. Which I would agree is the case.

News now exists to make a profit. It caters to the lowest common denomiatior. It is also a fucking soap opera. Did he kill his wife? What happened to the high school sweethart? Blah blah fucking blah.
I love the internet because I can screen things out. Man do I love that. Maybe what I care about wouldn't sell to the mass market millions, but thank God I don't have to pay attention to that.
I think another good question is about our culture and news. Once upon a time we had no internet, no cable, and only three major broadcast networks delivering the "truth". Now we have infinite sources. We used to all "drink from the same well", and that is no longer the case. Name the last time we had a true national consensue on any issue? One of the things I like about this forum is the wealth of sources and divergent viewpoints. I even cherish some of the crackpots.
News is changing. I get more info from the Powerline (Powerlineblog.com) than I do from any of the big three broadcast networks. I don't even remember when the last time I watched a network newscast.

I agree with these points you make. The internet is full of alternative news sources that just report the facts and nothing else, which is a very important thing. Once the rest of this country wakes up and realizes how insufficient the news they get from TV is, I think that's going to spell the end of network broadcasts as we know them today.

I think that the networks still do news because they can still make a profit catering to aging baby boomers who still give them brand loyalty.
I don't watch them, and I doubt my kids will. They are on their last leg. It is an end of an era.

For every Fox News, there are 3 Newsweeks. People who complain about conservative news sources should realize there are many more biased liberal news sources.

This is true. However, most liberal news sources don't lean as far to the left as Fox does to the right. To find the left-wing equivalent of Fox, you'd have to look at publications like the Guardian.

and even then, i would say that they aren't as far to the left as fox news is to the right. for example, there is no major media outlet in the US, and very few in europe, that don't inherently accept capitalism as a given for our society. i can't take people seriously when they say the democrats are a 'left wing' party - sure they are more to the left than the republicans, but when compared on a full spectrum of political thought, they are quite right wing. while i'm not in agreement with the majority of things that 'left wing' parties in denmark (enhedslisten and socialistisk folkepartie, mainly) say, i think it is refreshing to have their points of view present, and i think it hurts the state of political debate in the US that no such parties exist (on a big enough scale to have any effect/voice)

We're only talking about the liberal news media, not the socialist news media. If there were a socialist(or other non-capitalist) news network, it would be on the extreme fringe of American politics.

Most news is psychological product, same as any other form of media... In America, most of it is slightly liberal. I think this mostly stems from two things: Back when most news organizations were starting, liberal media probably sold a little bit better. And the majority of people who wish to make a career out of journalism are liberal. Both of these things might have been so subtle and slow to develop, that they were unnoticeable to those within the media. There was probably a conscious effort to be balanced. But, as I think we've all seen, there's no such thing as being perfectly balanced. And they drifted to the left... Now, the incredible success of Fox News has shown us that the media sold to liberals for way too long. As more conservatives began thirsting for news over the past decades, there was nothing that really connected with them. At least nothing they could turn to without feeling biased. It seems that Americans desperately want to believe they're getting the whole unbiased story, which is just silly. To check how 'balanced' it is, all a media source needs to do is survey its prime market.

I watch more news on BBC-AMerica than I watch U.S. news; by like a 99.5% to 0.5% ratio.

I think Jesus summed it pretty well.
But for the most part, the news put out by the major media is for entertainment purposes. If information doesn't relate directly to your life, it should be recognized rightly as entertainment. People always want to be entertained, even by the news.
