Third try's a charm?
    #4413549 - 07/17/05 01:59 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

My friend invested a good bit of money on his growing equipment because he was very interested in growing. I'm making this thread for him because he's pretty high and he doesn't feel like typing at the moment. He has tried growing twice at this point: once with a premixed substrate that came in the jars he ordered from ebay, and a second time using popcorn as a substrate. To his dismay, he was not successfull either time. At this point he's a little bit disconcerted: all that money spent and nothing to show for it. I know you guys can help. He plans on doing a third grow soon, but its success is contingent upon your replies and much needed advice.

The ebay pre mix was shit and the popcorn was shit. His techniques are based on the PF Tek (using half pint jars). Now for questions...

1. What is the most viable substrate mix that works well in jars? Recipes please.

2. What is the most forgiving and thriving strain?

I know there are going to be quite a few varied answers due to all of the responding grower's proclivities, but please take into consideration that my friend is a novice grower, and he's looking for ease as well as success. Thanks you.

this is the pf tek, the most common way for newbs to start.
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23593
the shit from ebay is just that, shit. make your own jars (way to easy and more guaranteed).
i think the B+ is a pretty easy strain to grow and alot of people suggest equadors for a first timer.

some common mistakes
always sterilize the needle before you do anything, and in between inoculations.

if sucking in air hold flame over needle

wipe the jar before adding the dry verm layer

dont go looking at your jars every 15 minutes

follow the recipe 100%

buy a hepa filter that is 99.9%

and as you can tell STERILITY IS KEY

stop being lazy...and make your own jars and buy a syringe from a sponsor of this site. thats is the most effective and easiest way.

and for starters..more likely then not you will fukk up the first grow. it takes patience and perservence. dont give up stay at it till yo ufind the right method and tek for you needs

Okay, in regards to the last post, im not lazy, i felt like i wasted all this time and money from buying an aquarium and pcing all these damn popcorn jars. if i was lazy i would grow out of a coke bottle. I dont take this hobby lightly, i want to learn and gain more experience, and if any of you read the post you would understand that you are supposed to tell post which strain is most user friendly and which substrate works the best, not telling me that i need more patience.

Cubensis period is friendly to home cultivators.

Use doc34's WBS tek to prepare jars, I did and it worked great on my first attempt.

Follow what the post here say, and I dont think you can go wrong,
for me I allways seem to do the same two Psilocybe Cubensis,
1. golden teachers, very quick producers
2. treasure coast, slower, but when they take off, watch out.

and make your own jars, its so easy, why pay somesone to do it
and not know about the quality.
The next crop I am going to try a harder strain, and try casing. :crazy2:

I bought the ebay jars , too. I also made my own. ( which they are right-- it is easy and no need to buy them. This is my first time, also. I have 14 jars inoculated on Jul 1st. with Golden Teacher and Blue Meanies. I have not birthed, yet . I am being patient
[url=http://www.shroomery.org/forums/files/05-28/148746370-jars071305.jpg][/url

I don't think I will have any problems with these jars ( time will tell)--

I defintitely listened to the advice of the pros on sterilty. I did not want to waste my time on F*%&* ups, so I took 2 days to sterilize a bathroom. I had gloves on. I had Lysol and Bleach/water. I had a lighter and I continually sterilized the needle.

Alright i know you are trying to help, but no one seems to be literate because i havent gotten a single response that answered every single point that my friend asked for. I would deeply appreciate it if an administrator like magash could post a well thought out post to help this newb get off on the right foot. I havnt had a problem with sterility and patience, everyone cut the crap and tell me what works

Yeah haha. I was being serious when I said this thread was for my friend. Direct all replies to shr00minator: he's the grower. I'm still soaking up all the info and trying to educate myself on the matters of growing as much as possible before I attempt a grow.

He is following the PF Tek.

Please respond to these questions:

1. What is the BEST substrate recipe that is jar friendly? I guess the parameters to guage by would be colonization rate, and ease of preparation.

2. What is the best strain - taking into consideration potency and ease of growth? Take into consideration his status as a new grower.

We are looking for your personal tips that you developed by trial and error when you were new to the hobby. Directing us to Teks isn't exactly what we want you to do, as we've read those through and through. Thanks again.

Yes, but there are other jar friendly substrates that outperform the PF Tek substrate. In the end, a shakeable substrate would be preferred due to the quicker myc. colonization.

doc34's wild birdseed tek is great for using grain, it colonizes faster than cakes, and if done step by step according to the tek, works very well.

Use a glovebox for making syringes and innoculating jars, fuck open air.

For your first grow using birdseed I would case with coco coir and verm, or peat and verm, try spawning to poo later.

Try that and you'll be happy, I never did a cake first and I'm never going to unless I'm extremely bored.
