I ground it up very well. I put it in water and when it was shook up it was still cloudy 24hrs later. I have no lime and was thinking of using baking soda but I am worried about the salt it will create when it reacts with the acid.

Don't worry, I have one. If you live in a colder climate you get used to it, I am uncomfortable at temps above 23C.

Update: I lost a jar of b+, but all the rest are looking good. I hope to see pins soon, maybe in a week or two.

Looks like my grow is going bulk. The thought of an invitro grow was great, but not worth letting the jars sit and do nothing. I don't know what I did different than roger, but I'm still a newb and thats probably all. A problem I had was my lids were on real tight and the jars started to stall out in the end, I loosened the lid a bit and they finished up quick. I cased one of my quarts two days ago and its looking great so far. I plan to try again soon, hopefully with more luck. What would be a good strain for fruiting invitro. My gt and b+ don't seem to like it.

The Orissa's are fantastic invitro fruiters Blackout. You'll be pleased with the results of them with a minamal amount of spent coffee grinds in your substrate.

Well I still have a jar of b+ thats going to a friend, the rest of those went bulk, the gt should make some nice casings....sometime this week I guess. Once I empty all my jars it'll be time to retry the coffee project.

Ok so, i have been experimenting with mycobags latley, and i have come up with a fairly decent bag recipie so far, being composed of 1/3horse manure (field aged), 1/3verm, and 1/3 simmered rye (via mag's tek) by volume. I mix all three components together dry (excpet the simmered rye which is simmered so its wet already) then add water to hydrate to my liking. I fruit invitro in the bags and as i know this doesnt incread yield, but more so time of colonization/pinning i think i would like to give this a try, I will be making up the bags next week and i figure i will simmer the rye in a 50/50 coffee solution and then use coffee water to hydrate the substrate before bagging. As soon as the bags are made and inoc'd i will post that update in this thread. I have a digital camera that works and will be doing control bags all inoccd from the same isolate with the same amount of solution and incubate side by side. I hope to post some more data to back up the usefulness of coffee as an additive. Viva Le Bags!

ok guys id have to say this coffee deal aint no bullshit =P i had a mycobag with b+ that stopped growing period at lke 10% maybee to much water dunno , but its been two months so i said screw it , and cased what was there , over a layed of bout 60% perlite and 40% peat , spread the grain with myc and topped with peat , sprayed it all down with coffee / water 50 50 and low n behold 2 days after its in the light now and showing alot of myc growth i might get a few mushies outta this one yet !

You shouldnt be spraying coffee on the casing layer, it should remain non-nutritious. If you didnt adjust the coffee ph then the casing layer is very susceptible to trich.

Yes, always good to experiment, but now since it is working well you may want to add some lime to your misting water to raise the ph a bit.

So does adding caffeine make a speedier trip? Anybody ingested these mushies yet?

No. And it isn't the caffeine that makes coffee work. Plain caffeine has little to no effect. It's the nutes and other chemicals in coffee that do the trick. Also, any nutrients/chemicals would be metabolized and not taken up into the fruits anyway. Coffee simply helps the mycelium to grow and pins to form sooner. Where coffee really shines, in my opinion however is in the sclerotia producing species. I've seen double to triple the growth and 200 gram stones of sclerotia in coffee hydrated rye berries.

Nutes:
When the fungus colonizes the substrate he needs to release enzymes out of the hyphae to split up the starch to poly-, oligo-, di- and monosaccharides. these and other soluble nutes r then transported into the "cell".

So these additional nutes from the coffee which are already water soluble r an instant energie source for the growing fungus, which could give the mycelium a decisive boost especially in the beginning

The downside is that these nutes are readily available to all microorganisms -> contam

Caffeine:
Well at first I was pretty skeptic about the caffeine theory but then(2month later) i read an scientific article somewhere on the web and things like the mention of youngbae about cAMP
"""caffeine and its metabolite has "phosphodiesterase inhibitor" function...so accumulated cAMP had played a role....its downstream .... cAMP have various function...especially "stress signaling, starvation signaling....in microbe""" this would sound reasonable(especially since i heard some of it before when i followed a discussion on TV about alcohol, tobacco and coffee/tea.)

If you starve you try to eat as much as possible as fast as possible.
-> faster mycelium growth

Also sclerotia are produced to survive stress situations(temp, no water, no food..) and to survive till there r some new nutes...
-> more sclerotia

And last but not least stress is normally reduced by reproduction. Nature usually doesn't want you to die as long as you didn't reproduce yourself(whatever you are).
->faster pinning and maturing

greets
=`:-)
