" As a mark is not set up for the purpose of missing the aim, so neither does the nature of evil ixist in the world." EPICTETUS

What about the nature of evil? Any thoughts?

Everyone has their own opinion on what is "evil" and what is not. I dont know if anything is truly "evil" but I do beleive that there is right and wrong. Some people would say satanists are evil but to them they are worshiping their god. It all depends on what you consiter "evil"

Two Epictetus quotes in one night...startling.

What I get out of that is that the nature of evil is whatever one makes it out to be. You will always find evil when you are looking for it so using the idea of "evil" in any pursuit is foolish. Instead individuals should use their own conceptions of virtue and view their world in accordance with how it relates to those conceptions which are often idealistic. In other words rather than painting something in a negative light by calling it evil it should be shown to be in disagreement with virtuous ideals.

Evil is a man-made concept.

There was no evil before men.

It is a (religious)concept, to scare you into a certain mind frame.

Nothing in the Universe can exist or happen which in its proper sense, in itself, and in its nature be bad; for everything is and is done by the wisdom and will of Creation and for the purpose which is intended.

Do you agree with this statement?

In universal terms, there is no evil.

In human terms, there is most definitely evil.

Human I would hope. Using universal terms to characterize human existance lacks function.

In other news I just turned 19.

Evil is hard to define, as many of you already pointed out.

What's even an example of evil? Hitler's extermination of 6 million jews? The 9/11 attack?

In the case of the holocaust, the nazis led by Hitler truly believed they were doing the world a service by exterminating "undesirable" people. They thought that eliminating these people from the gene pool would make the human race better. Is that an evil motive? Or just an ignorant one?

Congradulations old man.

I don't agree that seeing evil in universal terms lacks function. That's what the quote by E was speaking to me thinks.

Perhaps. The explanation I gave earlier makes more sense to me because it explains how human ideals can be integrated with a universal system while avoiding conflict. While there is no "evil" there are still things which do not comply with our individual ideas of virtue. This also promotes acceptance of other beliefs by stressing the importance of individual thought.

Of course I could be entirely wrong but what using what little I know about Epictetus and philosophy in general it seems a reasonable enough conclusion.

most of shroomers will say evil is an illusion, but will make up some bullshit reason to judge others because they can't emotionally get over all the "evil" things, specially when it comes to rape and killing, everyone seems to have a thing about rape, it's a button that switches on contradiction in personal philosophy.

My message to all of you. Make up your mind in what you believe.
If you reject notions of good and evil, do not be a coward, and look at all the horros in the face, and accept them as something neutral.
Otherwise, find a way to explain and justify notions of good and evil, and follow your emotions.

Just don't be inconsistant and irrational.

Hmmm...moving the mark away from the aim - could that be evils nature ?

Evil is the purest form of selfishness at the cost of another.

evil is a word that all sorts of different meanings have been attached to.

to me, 'evil' is harming others in some way for the sake of your own personal gain. there are problems in defining exactly what harm is, and what personal gain is, but that's the general principle IMO. selfishness is at the heart of it, and also the lack of care for others which is necessary to satisfy that selfishness. it all arises from placing too much importance on the ego.

i don't believe that evil exists outside of the mind. its simply a description for a particular type of behaviour, and a particular mindset.
