4/4 beats

There is something very nice about a simplistic 4/4 beat, it is very driving and hypnotic. I love more varied time signatures, such as the entire album Time Out by Dave Brubeck, but even basic 4/4 I really like. I realize that time signatures arent incredibably important when playing music, but for example, the first song off Of Faust So Far, where the drums start with a very forceful and driving 4/4 beat. then a piano comes in with the same rhythm, then more and more instruments. It is a very strange song.

4/4 beats are pretty cool. I like writing break beat stuff also though. It's weird, mostly people that do 4/4s well don't do break beats well, and vice versa. It's that they go about the basslines all wrong...

time isgnature is VERY important to the way you "hear" the song, differnet time signatures give diofferent landscapes for the music...
imo time signature is just as important when constructing a song as any other part.

Eh, maybe for the drummer. Especially during a drum solo. But as a guitar player, if I am going to solo, it is not overly important. In classical guitar it is somewhat important, but I guess I was just trying to say that it isnt all that hard to play in a different time signature. A waltz isnt much harder then any other classical piece. Even as a new bass player, it is not any harder really. Of course I try to play in weird rhythms on purpose, as I like how it sounds.

The time signature of a piece is still important for you as a guitarist soloing. If the piece is in 4/4 and you're soloing in 3/4 it aint gonna work.

actually it would probably sound great if you knew where you were going with it. a great thing about 4/4 time is it is easy to 'move around inside of' playing hemiolos(sp?) are great because you can wander away from the 4/4 rhythm's 1, and then eventually meet up again at so many measures.
i love playing in other time signatures but i have to admit 4/4 is probably my favorite.. (maybe cuz i was raised hearing nothing but?) but it does have a very driving force, sort of clock-ticking earth-turning type power.
i like playing 3 measures of 4/4 before i repeat... this keeps the rhythm really tight but is not so irritating. sometimes that 4th measure is really redundant... playing only 3 measures gives it sort of this haiku-ish feel and more interesting i think.
a cool electronic track that does this is "c-pach" by Autechre

this whole thread praising the sound of 4/4 is like proclaiming you like heterosexual sex better than homo sex. 90% of songs are in 4/4, well, rock songs and classical music anyway. it's only certain ethnic music like jazz and salsa that more often use anything other than 4/4.

actually you can find many groups from any genre that explore the big colorful world beyond the 4/4 box.

yea, like alot of the love ballads are in 6/8, and I've heard alot of classical in different time signatures, like waltzs are in 3/4 I think.
