Drying Fresh Mushrooms

Sorry about the large picture, I couldn't resize for this one. Above is how I have to decided to dry my mushrooms. On the far side of the kitchen paper is 50g of fresh Philippine mushrooms, on the near (right) side are some 50g of Mexican mushrooms. Should this be okay? I am not extremely bothered about possibly losing mg's of psilocybin, the reason for drying is so that I can keep the shrooms for up to a year. I do not have a desiccant or a dehydrator or an American Harvest something or other which I have read assist the drying process. So my question is if I continue to fan dry these mushrooms for a day or two until they appear shriveled up, will they be able to keep in a normal air-tight container until next summer? I am living in the UK, and shrooms are being illegalized on the 18th of July, so I want to keep some for next summer. Thanks in advance for your help.

They have to be cracker dry and they might retain Some moisture that way....Def. don't want to open that container next year and find mold everywhere ;P
Build a ghetto desiccant chamber.Werks great

O.K. what's the deal with this "cracker dry" shit? If they are that dry they will likely crumble apart into dust.
I, for one, like to see the mushrooms intact looking. Especially if I'm buying some at a show or something.
Wouldn't it be O.K. to fan dry them until they're like 95% dry but still hold together without turning to dust?
How come marijuanna doesn't have to be "cracker dry"?
Could they be 95% dried and then frozen or something, if nescessary?
I just don't see how miniscule ammounts of moisture would foster mold growth of any kind.
Isn't that why beef jerky doesn't go bad? Because it has only a small ammount of moisture, yet it still holds it's form and shape?

Mushrooms, dried to "cracker dry" will last for months and months (years) in a freezer. One speck of moisture is room for rot to set in.
They do not all crumble when dried...some do from wear and tear in the bag, but many stay whole. I think the main reason people pick and dry right before the cap opens up has nothing to do with potency, but more with asthetics. The unopened cap has a better chance of staying whole.

O.K., but what if they are fan dried, and then frozen? Wouldn't that still be O.K.?

Not if there is any moisture.. Cracker dry just means they snap instead of bend.. They hold their shape just fine..

I really don't wish to be percieved as an overly-persistent ass, but if they are fan dried for a couple of days, eliminating most of the moisture, and then frozen, why exactly would that not be O.K.?

from what i hear, fan dried, then desiccant to finish, then freezer is best

If you don't eliminate ALL of the moisture (fan dry for 2 days and then Damp Rid for a day) you will get mold. It doesn't matter if they are in the fridge or the freezer, a small amount of water is all that is needed for mold to grow.

Yes, most probably so. Depending on your individual definition of "best".
For me, "best" is potency preservation, and preservation of the asthetics of the mushroom.
I assumed, perhaps errantly, that as long as the moisture content was reduced beyond a certain threshold bacterial and mold growth is unsustainable. And therefore, allowing a certain very small ammount of moisture content so that the shrooms would still bend rather than snap should help preserve the asthetics of the mushroom, prevent them from powdering down through handling, and still be below the threshold at which attacking organisms could grow.
So, I'm absolutely incorrect in that assumption?

How come the same does not seem to hold true with weed? See my above post ^^^
Also, how is mold going to grow in a sub-zero degree freezer?

Why did you ask the question, if you don't want to accept the answer? If you don't like the answer... do it your way! If it works... Great! If it doesn't... Lesson Learned

I can dig that, but I also assumed someone with more experience than I would have undoubtedly gone through the same thought process as me at some point and tried it. I would simply like someone to please explain to me in a scientific way why you have to dry mushrooms out bone dry, yet you do not have to dry out weed bone dry, to prevent molds from growing. I thought this simple question would be fairly common knowledge to the gurus.

Weed an shrooms are different things. I have zero knowledge on weed, so I have no idea why weed can be moist and and rot, but you cant assume that just because you are talking about two plants that they will react the exact same way to the same situation.

I hear ya bro. For good measure, I would make a dehydrator like I did (Tupperware, screen, Damp Rid) and put the shrooms in there for a day. Either way, have fun and if your shrooms get moldy, grow some more!

I'm thinking of just leaving them in an open container (after 2 -3 days of fan drying) and check on them from time to time to be sure they're O.K. I hate the thought of having to expose them to whatever chemicals are in that damp rid stuff too.

I fan dry for 48 hours and that's all. Never had a problem... however I don't keep them for months. More like weeks.

1st, if your weed isn't dried properly, it gets moldy if you keep it in the bag.. Second, a little bit of moisture in mush that you are going to freeze is bad because, water expands when it is frozen.. So, if the mush molecules have water in them, and are then frozen, the water will expand, and destroy the structure of the mushrooms, and on thawing, the mushrooms will quite literally turn to mush.. If you just keep them @ room temp, with some moisture in them for a long time, then, just like weed, they'll get moldy..
