Australian Prime Minister John Howard has called for national identification cards for Australian citizens to return to the agenda in the wake of the London terrorists attacks.
Mr Howard said the idea should be considered, although the government at this point has not made a final decision on the matter.
"This is an issue that ought to be back on the table but back on the table as part of inevitably looking at everything in the wake of the terrible tragedy in London," he said.
"We haven't made a decision to have an ID card in this country but it should properly be on the table and we should properly assess whether in the light of what's happened in the 17 or 18 years that have gone by since the Australia Card was debated."
Mr Howard vigorously campaigned against the Australia Card proposal which was raised in 1987, but he said times have changed.
