double tub substrate question
    #4410492 - 07/16/05 02:50 AM (11 years, 9 months ago)

how much would it effect the final result of the double tub grow if you used cow poo instead of horse poo?
and
do you need to pasteurize the poo or just use it straight off the ground?
sorry these are stupid questions but if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated

A high percentage of Shroomery people will tell you that Cow poo does not have the same level of nutrients that Horse poo does, and HP is the way to go. Some postings of late have some folks having some success with Cow poo, but they are in a very small minority. Pasteurization has become another question, as many skilled people have been using well-composted HP without pasteurizing it with tremendous success. If you aren't sure exactly what you want or need for "well-composted" then stick with the safety of pasteurization. In short, horse poo yes, and pasteurization yes if you don't know what to look for IMO.

I thought cow poo was supposed to be a very good substrate, even if it is not as good as horse poo. I've never heard of it being that far inferior before.

Because cows have 4 stomaches, alot of nutrients are used up by the cow. You can still get fruits off of it but not as prolific or as potent as HP.

Its mainly a texture problem too, fluffy fiberous texture of horse poo is wanted far more over muddy cow poo. You could collect cow poo, and mix it in with straw, coir, and verm..or use it as an additive to your substrate, rather then substrate, so instead of 80% poo, 20% spawn, just 20% poo, with 80% spawn. You could try a little more poo, if you add coir and verm to it to fluff it up too and see what ratios work best for you. Horse poo will give you more consistant results though used as is, maybe adding some chunky verm to fluff it up a bit.
