I removed a mushroom from a 50/50+ casing. The substrate is wbs.

I accidentally broke the mushroom near the base and there was a ring of dark purple(almost black) in the interior of the stalk. It was a solid band. It looked very familiar, in color, to the stains we have all seen. I broke the stem in another spot and there was a ring there as well, which led me to believe it was running thru the entire stem or most of it.

I was alarmed at first and then optimistic. I am hoping this just means its a very funky shroom. But I need to be sure. I checked other mushrooms on the casing and didn't find any others that had the ring, not to say there wasnt more(I only checked 5 others)

Anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks

I seriously doubt it is anything other than bruising.

I'm not an expert though

Wait for Diver, roadkill, agar, scatmanrav, etc. etc.

Is it a Very DarK Blue color or...black?

Check in some bright light so that you can see it well...

If it's Black, then that doesn't sound good...But as for Dark blue...That'd be something less to wry about...

But as for it being in bands...That is it a bit strange...

Well its almost like a perennial ring in a tree. The band is about 3 mm wide, and makes a complete circle in the inside of the stem and it appears to run the entire length of the stem. It was a really dark blue.

Its not like a typical bruise though as it was already there when the stem was broken in 2 different spots. Its almost like a vein that ran thru the entire stem. Its really cylindrical in shape it would seem.

I dont want to be alarmed, but I need to know. If its just a funky shroom, then cool, but I also dont want to take any chances.

Anyone else have any opinions?

take pics first!!! also you could try to cut the stem and then take a sterile portion of the blue inner discolored flesh, then grow it out in a petri dish and see what happens with the new mycellium.. Just some ideas.

If you grew it out and it ended up growing all shrooms with this quality you could have a super-strain!!

I've seen several specimens that had blue veins from primordia to maturity. Nothing to worry yourself about.
