new grower questions about casing & such please help....
    #4409607 - 07/15/05 11:12 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Thanks for takin the time to look at my post.. I want to case with regular vermiculite.. I found a tupperare type container that might work. It meausres 3" deep, 12 1/2" long, and 8 1/2" wide. It is microwavable safe. The lid for it seals air tite....my question is if i use this to case, can i leave the lid on? and fan it now and again? or am i gonna have to poke holes or somthing? hers a pic of the container. sorry for the quality.

Any help is greatly apreciated

You could incubate it with the lid it came with, yes. Poke several holes in it with a hot nail or something. Looks good to me, be sure to make that substrate deep as possible (just under 3 inches, leave room for the casing!)

So i should lay about 1/2" vermiculite at the bottom, then lay just under 3" of the substrate, the case it the rest of the way..?? also so the holes whould have to be on the lid right at the beggining or after a few days??

i believe you want to cold shock after you get the casing set. cold shocking now will induce the primodia phase and then pinnig, when you case your gonna wanna let the myc heal its self after you crumble it, then resetting and colonize your new substrate layer.

be sure after you case it, ot patch it often as possible. that will give you a nice even pin layer, and prevent overlayes. after you see a nice even whiteness to the top layer that looks even and everything looks good, drop the temps by about 10 deg to induce its fruiting phase, throw on some light too when you do it.

keep your RH around 80 to 85 and temps 76 to 78 typically. you can put the casing in FC and drop the FC temp with an ice pak or put it near an ac unit. personally i throw em in the fridge for 24 hours, ive read some ppl thats what does the trick and others it slows there pinning. when you are colonizing the substrate of your casing make sure you keep it dark and in the low 80's, just like when you incubate. its kinda the same principal.

Substrat on the bottom, verm on the top to control moisture, it takes a while for the myc to grow up through the case, as soon as you see it, drop the temp, expose it to real sun for about 10 minutes and keep it moist, time does the rest.

Opps, missed this part, You can microwave, kind of messy.... Put a jar of water in with it to slow things down. I used to nuke it in a cereal dish. or just boil it up in a pan.

i dont f with the microwave. i strongly think that the microwaves destroy the electroytes and other catalyst agents in your substrate materials. if thats too technical, then you know how when you cook veggies in the microwave you loose like a hige portion of its vitamins and plus they taste like rubber.

picture your self as the fungi, would you rather eat shyt thats nuked in the microwave, or something that slow roasted cooked out side on a BBQ if your vegan then just work with me :-P

i recommend breaking down and getting a PC. its work the 35 bux you can spend at target or wally world. you will save that from all of the contam cakes you prevent. im fairly new to this hobby but ive only lost a few cakes out of 30 or 35

since you dont need to worry about the verm getting wet since it should be moist neways, throw it into an oven bag you can get at price chopper for like 3 bux, and put it into a pot with boiling water for a n hour or two, that should strelize the f outta it.

standard goes... 1/2" bottom layer, substrate then casing layer of about 25%. patch often make it spread evenly. you can not do a bottom layer but i dont recommend it. verm is cheap. dont make the verm to wet read a tek or two to get familiar.

definatly if its your first time to case, read and follow a tek to exact direction or you will f it up and not be plz's. i recommend starting with a 50/50 those are hard to f up. how many cakes you gonna use and what kinda FC you got. make sure the verm on the casing is moist, and fill in the side of the tray where teh substrate shrinks that is cristcial too  and be patient.

I got a pretty big fc , its a rubbermaid type roughly 3'-3' & 1/2" long, 2'-2' & 1/2" wide, and a lil over 2 feet deep., with a lid that snaps on top fairly tite. plan on using perlite for huminity.

awesome i cant wait to see, i did 25 cake my first grow, i would recommend doing up smaller casing then like larger ones, becuase patching require a fair amount of XP and more casing would lower your ERR rate.

woooowe zoowwwwweee, thats a big casing batman. definatly look up some teks with pics to see how many you need to surfice. bigger the case teh more of a pain it is to move or patch or flush or make pin evenly.

I always cased small when I started. I used some plastic containers the size of a meatloaf pan. If you have several small containers you have much better odds than with just a couple big casings. Most of the teks call for a bottom casing layer but not everybody agrees that this is needed and you don't really have room for it anyway. I have not used a bottom layer when I didn't have the room for it and things worked out just fine. I would go with the advice above 3 inch substrate and your top layer of vermiculite and good luck. You will probably find that casing are not so hard!
