ME and the wife have been throwing around the idea of taking a vacation to Amsterdam late next year. so i figured who better to ask than you guys. if you have been what was your experience like? what coffee shops would you recommend and which ones to stay away from? we plan to hit up a lot of the museums, the canal and maybe the zoo. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For eating and gambling:  the Leidseplein.  The museums (Van Gogh & Rijk) are in this neighborhood, as well as Vondel Park.  I highly recommend the Leidseplein.  Lots of good art, eateries, and scenic spots to people watch.

For smoking:  The Noon, Global Chillage, Blues Brothers, Abraxa, The Bush Doctor.  The Dolphins is a nice place for atmosphere and location, but it's gotten pricey and the menu never changes.

Northern Amsterdam is cool; many coffeeshops and sites of interest (red light, Dam Square, etc.), but I DO NOT recommend a hotel in this area.  I stayed at a place near the redlight once, and my room got broken into.  A girl I was with didn't have her passport in the safe, and it gotten stolen.  That sucked bad. :frown:

I would recommend taking the tour of the Wester Kirk near the Anne Frank house.... it's one of the tallest towers in Amsterdam (which is pretty flat), and it gives you a really spectacular view of the city.

If you go, I suggest you take the time to learn some simple Dutch phrases.  Everyone speaks English, but they appreciate it if you show some interest in the local language; you don't want to look like you're a typical American "drug tourist", do you?  Just, "Dank u vel", and "Pardon".... simple phrases.

Amsterdam's an awesome city to visit; you'll love it.  I could go on and on about things to do, but won't.  Hope this helps.

Hey, no problem. I've been three times, and seen lots of different things.

I'll try to think of some good ettiquette and general tips in this post.

Um....

Probably most important: Be curteous and respectful. Most Dutch are very respectful and mindful of good manners; do the same. Don't be loud and obnoxious, even if you get ripping drunk. No one likes a rowdy tourist.

DO NOT buy street drugs. Even the ecstacy pills. So much of the shit isn't trustworthy, and probably 9 times outta 10 your gonna get ripped off. Also, since everything sold on the street is illegal, there's a chance you'll get busted (they set up sting ops). No one wants to go to foreign jail during their vacation.

Transportation: Personally, I like to walk pretty much everywhere. It's free, Amsterdam is really pretty, you get to do a lot of people watching, and nothing is too far away that you can't walk to it. However, if you want to get somewhere in a hurry, use the tram-line or the cabs. You could also rent a bike, but its a little scary riding them around town. Takes some practice.

What else?? Uh.... If you don't know how things work somewhere (etiquette or custom-wise), just pay attention; observe what others around you are doing. Follow in suit. At most places, tipping isn't customary like it is in the states, but tips are appreciated and should be given for good service. Example: You go to buy weed in the coffeeshop. The house dealer is very congenial, offers you advice on what strains to get, maybe hooks it up a bit. You would definitely tip him. But, if he's just "strictly business", and nothing more, you wouldn't be obligated to tip.

More later.

Grasshopper, schmasshopper. It's okay, but there are cooler places. I prefer smaller shops, that focus on a particular specialty. For hashes, I like The Noon and Global Chillage, and for grass: The Bush Doctor or the Rokerij.

Yeah, nice cover up.  You were probably over there wondering from McDonald's to McDondald's in your cowboy boots and John Deere cap trying to find the most American style coffeeshop in town.

I do.  I just don't actively seek it out.  Good god I got stoned.  I was left alone in the red light district tripping on, I think it was liberty caps, by my roommate at the time while he went to get a prostitute.  It was nuts.  It was like a concert crowd on the corner of the canal I said I'd stand at.  He had to talk me down and that it would be okay.  Some foreigner came up to me and started talking and I KNEW he was shady and trying to sell me Bad Drugs. :smirk:

Yeah, tripping is pretty wild there.  I too found it alarming hearing a foreign language while tripping.  I ate a bunch of cubes and went to the Van Gogh museum.

The Grey Area is the only American owned coffeeshop in Amsterdam. It's a decent little shop, with a great kief called "Grey Mist". Little pricey, though.
