Why use cakes?
    #4409134 - 07/15/05 09:03 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

Why are cake substrates so popular? Couldn't a grower just mix up a bunch of substrate, throw it in a pyrex baking pan, heat it in the oven at 450F for a few hours to sterilize it, and then inject spore solution at about 15 different locations on the substrate?

I understand that jars allow for lids and are much easier to keep free from contamination, but if a grower were to fabricate a special lid for the pyrex pan in hopes of keeping contaminants out, could it work? It would offer tons of surface area, and it would be much easier to manage. What are the flaws to such an approach? Would the colonization of myc. lag due to such a large surface area? Any thoughts?

I know someone that plans on growing, and he is interested in keeping materials to a minimum if at all possible.

I think most people here actually use Quart jars of WBS and case/spawn them to poo..

Cakes were popular once upon a time, being that they were one of the first mainstream introductions to home cultivation of P. Cubensis. Getting a large mass of BRF like you mentioned to colonize and fruit would be a challenge, the stuff is just too slow with moisture requirments approaching near "perfect" for success. An equivalent pan filled with horse poo, and spawned with WBS would light up extremely fast in comparison, and give you MUCH better results in all areas of performance; potency, moisture retention, flush recovery...you name it.

I wouldn't recommend cakes to anyone new to this hobby, as they're better off spending the time to get grains under the belt, then spawn to a good bulk substrate.

To find a place to live between the negatives and positives.

Because they are soooo easy its almost imposible to screw up.

Although I have been attempting grains here and there I have much more problems with them.

I have the pf tek down so well now, that with little effort I can grow tons of mushies. Usually about 2oz dry per 12 pf cakes first flush.

I want to do grains but I dont have near the success I do with cakes. Once I master grains, Im sure I will never look back though.
