Anyone microwaved a contamed cake to kill the microorganisms?
    #4406431 - 07/15/05 02:22 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

I'm going to try an experiment, and it goes a little something like this.

Throw together a BRF cake quickly, stick your finger in it or whatever to make sure it gets contamed. Dont worry about any spores because they have nothing to do with this.

Put the cake into an incubation chamber until you can see the contam spreading.

Once the contam is a decent visible size, say the size of a coin. Put the jar in the microwave for say 5 mins.

Then put it back in the incubation chamber and give it how ever long it takes to see if the contam still grows.

If the contam has stop spreading then the microwave has proven to be a successful sterilization method.

Has anyone tried this before?

I did it with pasta and it worked. Stopped the green mould. Reinnoculated and it colonised. Many say it is dangerous to eat from infected substrate, many say it is not. I say somebody say there was a study dont by Stamets saying the fruitbodies would not absorb the toxins. I have never seen the study and it could be BS

this may be a stupid question but: wots the problem with just microwaving the cake after you've made it? instead of using a pressure cooker or steam if the aim is to sterilize the jar etc.

From what i understand about microwaves, it will dry out your jar before it sterilizes it.

Moisture loss and hot/cold spots are the problems with microwaves. The only way I figure to correct it is to weigh your jar, grain and water. You can then figure out how much water you have lost. You can add excess water at the start which can be boiled off. Or you can boil the grain dry and inject a specific amount of water or LC.

I have successfully microwaved grains. In a month or so I will have a do a guide, if all goes well.

are you talking about microwaving a cake after its been germinated and a contam has been spotted? Or are you referring to just sterlizing your substrate before inoculation?

i was talkin about just sterilizing the cake in the jar before inoculation in place of using a pressure cooker. i know that if microwaved after germination the mycelia would be killed and therefore no shrooms. i just thought if possible then why not microwave instead of using a pressure cooker as it seams it would be easier and maybe quicker.

It only SEAMS that way. Once you pressure cook youll see how easy it really is. Microwaving is much more of a difficult task which would require you to understand the whole process going on, and to do alot of experimenting. Until someone does alot of experimenting though (such as blackouts doing) and gets something written down for people to follow, the PC is your friend.
