The suicide bomb squad from Leeds
By Michael Evans, Daniel McGrory and Stewart Tendler

FOUR friends from northern England have changed the face of terrorism by carrying out the suicide bombings that brought carnage to London last week.
It emerged last night that, for the first time in Western Europe, suicide bombers have been recruited for attacks. Security forces are coming to terms with the realisation that young Britons are prepared to die for their militant cause.

Three of the men lived in Leeds and the immediate fear is that members of a terrorist cell linked to the city are planning further strikes. The mastermind behind the attacks and the bombmaker are both still thought to be at large.

The man who planted the bomb at Edgware Road was named last night as Mohammed Sidique Khan, 30, the married father of an eight-month-old baby, who is believed to have come from the Leeds area.

Two other terrorists were Hasib Hussain, 19, who bombed the bus in Tavistock Square, of Colenso Mount, Leeds, and Shehzad Tanweer, 22, the Aldgate bomber, who lived at Colwyn Road, Leeds.

Police are still trying to identify the fourth, whose remains are believed to be in the bombed Tube train carriage on the Piccadilly Line.

Armed police raided six addresses in West Yorkshire yesterday, including the homes of three of the men, who they now know, travelled to King?s Cross by train, each armed with a 10lb rucksack bomb. Police found a bomb factory in Leeds containing a ?viable amount of explosives?. Explosives were also recovered from a car left parked near Luton station.

The raids came after the discovery of driving licences and credit cards at the scenes of the explosions, and a telephone call from the mother of Hasib Hussain, who asked police to try to trace her son.

A relative of one of the bombers was arrested and taken to London for questioning.

Intelligence agencies say that at least two of the men had recently returned from Pakistan. All four were British, but with origins in Pakistan. MI6, MI5 and British diplomats were in touch with the Pakistani authorities last night to try to track down any connections with terrorists there. Security sources confirmed that none of the bombers was on any MI5 file, although one had links to a person investigated by police.

The four were captured on CCTV cameras at King?s Cross Thameslink station, laughing together and carrying rucksacks, minutes before they set off for their targets at 8.30am on July 7.

?One of the men was reported missing by his family,? Deputy Assistant Commissioner Peter Clarke, head of the Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Branch, said.

interesting the MSM and BBC are focusing on the bombers being British, but not that they are extremist Islamists, the whitewash of Muslim terrorists seems to be in full gear by the UK media.

London bombers 'were all British'

Detectives now believe the London bombings were carried out by four British-born men in what were possibly the country's first suicide attacks.
Security sources said it was likely at least three of the men, said to be of Pakistani-descent, are dead after their belongings were found at the scenes.

The details emerged as explosives were found in Leeds and Luton after a series of raids. One man has been arrested.

The BBC's Frank Gardner said an expert may have offered the bombers guidance.

It appears our youth have been involved in last week's horrific bombings - nothing in Islam can ever justify the evil actions of the bombers

Sir Iqbal Sacranie, Muslim Council of Britain

Analysis: Worst fears true

The security correspondent said the suspected bombers - one of whom is thought to have been as young as 19 - may have been helped by someone who would have left the country before the bombs went off.

Police revealed details of the breakthrough in their investigation into the attacks, which killed at least 52 people, on Tuesday.

On Monday night they had viewed CCTV footage of the men together at London King's Cross last Thursday.

They all had rucksacks and were seen just 20 minutes before the three Tube bombs started going off at 0851 BST. A bus bomb went off in Tavistock Square at 0947 BST.

Three of the men had travelled to Luton from Leeds by train, before catching a Thameslink train to London. They had been joined at Luton by a fourth man who had driven to the Bedfordshire town.

'Shock and horror'

Sir Iqbal Sacranie of the Muslim Council of Britain said they had received news of the suspects with "anguish, shock and horror".

He said: "It appears our youth have been involved in last week's horrific bombings against innocent people.

"While the police investigation continues we reiterate our absolute commitment and resolve to helping the police bring to justice all involved in this crime of mass murder. Nothing in Islam can ever justify the evil actions of the bombers."

Tuesday's police raids, which began at 0630 BST, centred on two properties in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and four in Leeds.

WEST YORKSHIRE RAIDS

1. 0630 BST: Two houses raided in Beeston
2. Two houses raided at same time in Thornhill, Dewsbury
3. One House raided in Holbeck
4. 1320 BST: Controlled explosion in Burley

Leeds neighbours' shock

Police said they had arrested a relative of one of the four suspects in Yorkshire and taken them to London for questioning.

Explosives were also later found in a car at Luton railway station, where experts carried out five controlled explosions.

A second car believed to be linked to the attacks was also found at the station and towed to Leighton Buzzard, 10 miles (16km) west of Luton, for further examination.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the searches, carried out under the Anti-Terrorism Act, were intelligence-led and "directly connected" to last week's attacks.

Head of the Metropolitan Police anti-terrorist branch Peter Clarke said documents identifying three of the men were found near three blast sites.

But there is no identity for the fourth bomber and police do not know if his remains are at the King's Cross blast site or if he has fled.

Three of the four men were from the West Yorkshire area, said Mr Clarke.

His colleague, assistant commissioner Andy Hayman, said: "I want to conclude by making it absolutely clear that no-one should be in any doubt the work last Thursday is that of extremists and criminals.

"No-one should smear or stigmatise any community with these acts."

Evidence found at each London location
Following developments on Tuesday he described the investigation as "complex and intensive" and "moving at great speed".

Leeds area: Six houses searched, controlled explosion at one, one arrest made
Luton: Controlled explosion after car find near station

Detectives focus on Luton car

Police said there was forensic evidence that one of the bombers died in the Aldgate Tube explosion.

Property belonging to one of the suspects from West Yorkshire, who was reported missing by his family just after 1000 BST on Thursday, was also found on the devastated bus.

A third man's property was found at both the Aldgate and Edgware Road blasts.

Mr Clarke said: "We are trying to establish their movements in the run up to last week's attacks and specifically to establish if they all died in the explosions."

Eleven victims of the blasts have now been formally identified.

Eight inquests will be opened on Wednesday, including those of Londoners Jamie Gordon, 30, and Phillip Russell, 29.

Police are asking for anyone with information on the bombs to contact their anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

Anxious mother's call led police to her bomber son
By Daniel McGrory
The four young men met at Luton with their rucksacks of explosive and joined commuters on a Thameslink train to King's Cross

A TELEPHONE call from a worried mother in Leeds trying to find her missing teenage son led police to unravel the identity of the London suicide bombers.
The call was one of thousands the police handled last Thursday morning as news bulletins were reporting a series of explosions on the London Underground.

This particular call came at 10pm, more than 12 hours after the last explosion had ripped the roof off a No 30 bus in Tavistock Square. The woman caller gave the name of her son as Hasib Hussain, who was aged 19. She told how she had been unable to raise him on his mobile telephone.

Hussain had left his parents? home on Wednesday evening saying only he was going to visit friends in London. The strain in Mrs Hussain?s voice was obvious as she was gently told to describe what he was wearing the last time the family saw him and anything distinctive, such a watch or other jewellery.

By the time of the call from Leeds, forensic teams had begun bringing the first bodies clear of the bombed out Tube trains and the bus to begin the arduous process of identifying the dead. As dusk was gathering, a masked officer on the bus was noting what each victim had been wearing.

The burnt and bloodied clothes of one young man were a match of the description given by Mrs Hussein. What was immediately clear to the scientific teams was that the injuries the teenager suffered meant that he had to have been close to the bomb.

From their expertise, the teams also knew that these were the type of injuries that a suicide bomber would sustain, including instant decapitation.

Teams of police and computer specialists were already laboriously searching through hours of footage from CCTV cameras from around all the Underground stations and from buildings around Tavistock Square.

They were told to look for a distinctive coloured top worn by Hussain who, senior investigators now feared, was the first suicide bomber to strike in Europe. From then on officers were told to concentrate on CCTV film taken from King?s Cross station.

Technical teams had figured out the various permutations of where the bombers could have begun their journey.

The four suicide bombers met up at Luton station where they boarded a Thameslink train with hundreds of other commuters, reaching King?s Cross at about 8.20. CCTV clearly picked up Hussain amid the sea of faces hurrying to catch their trains. It was then just after 8.30.

He had a rucksack clutched in front of him.

What staggered those examining the film was that surrounding him were three other young men. They were all of similar age, and appeared to be of Pakistani origin. No one scurrying across the station concourse paid much attention to this group of smartly dressed young men, who were all carrying similar sized rucksacks.

For several minutes their heads were close together as they chatted. Without any elaborate farewells the four then split up and went their separate ways.

One of the men, Shehzad Tanweer, 24 had hired a car and driven to Luton where he parked the vehicle in the station carpark then hopped on to a commuter train.

As police fill in the gaps in the terror cell?s operation, they want to know why Tanweer decided to take a different route to their rendezvous. He had told the car hire company that he would return the red Nissan Micra the next day.
Police were told to check station carparks at commuter towns around the capital on Thursday evening. It was not until yesterday that bomb squad officers were sent to the 24-hour multi-storey carpark that sits 50 yards from Luton station.

Police will not say why it took them so long to deal with the car. One suggestion is that they wanted to be sure of all six addresses that they raided yesterday, so as not to spook others in the cell.

Passengers were moved out of Luton station as the bomb squad carried out two controlled explosions. Police had no need of DNA evidence to identify the bombers as the men were all carrying personal documents.

One police source said: ?It is as if they wanted their identities to be known. Their names will never be forgotten.?

Documents from one of the group were found on both the bombed-out train at Aldgate and the one at Edgware Road. Police will not say why.

Property from another of the group was recovered from the Circle Line train at Aldgate. Officers would not disclose last night how the bombers paid for their rail tickets, nor who may have funded this operation. But there was enough documentation found on the bodies of three of the four to lead police to their home addresses.

All were from suburbs orbiting Leeds, a city with a strong Muslim community, many of them with their family links in Pakistan.

What police did not know at this stage was who masterminded the synchronised bomb attacks. Nor did they have the identity of the bombmaker.

Police refused to disclose last night whether the ?personal property? found on the bombers included any clues as to the militant group behind this attack. There was obvious pressure on Scotland Yard and the security services immediately to mount armed raids on the men?s home addresses to reassure a nervous public that they knew who was responsible for the murder of more than fifty people.

Instead they waited, checking with agents in Pakistan what, if anything, was known about the four, or whether there were links with militant groups operating here. The security authorities wanted to establish how many more would-be suicide bombers were part of this cell.

They were puzzled why only one of the men?s families had reported a missing person, and whether any relatives and friends knew the rest had travelled to London.

What became quickly obvious was that neither MI5 nor MI6 knew anything about these four. They were, in the venacular of counter terror officers, ?lilywhites?. The expectation was that the cell would come from the same ethnic background and live close together. Police believe that the plan for the attack may have been originally based on planting bombs North, South, East and West but they are still puzzled why the bus bomb went off so long after the others. One theory is that the fourth bomb did not go off as expected and the bomber was forced to leave the Underground when stations were evacuated.

Speculation that that was the case was prompted by an eye-witness on the bus who said he saw an ?agitated? young man rummaging in a rucksack.

Suicide bombers are routine in Iraq. They were used to ram lorries laden with explosives into the British Consulate in Istanbul in November 2003 and carry bombs into a string of resturants and hotels in Casablanca seven months earlier.

But this was the first time that young Britons had been recruited to die.

The certainty of these articles is pretty strange considering I just read a headline on Yahoo News titled "London Bombs May Have Been Suicide Attacks" dated 9 minutes ago.

I'm just saying, the reports seemed to be conflicted with regard to their certainty. I don't tend to believe things just on as-yet-unproven speculation.

Passenger on London Bus Saw Man ~~ that may have been the suicide bomber
Las Vegas Sun ^ | July 12, 2005 at 19:12:48 PDT | BETH GARDINER ASSOCIATED PRESS

Posted on 07/12/2005 10:07:37 PM PDT by Ernest_at_the_Beach

LONDON (AP) -

A man who got off a packed London bus just before it exploded said Tuesday that he had noticed one of his fellow passengers - possibly the bomber - fiddling anxiously with a bag. He said he heard an "excruciating" scream just before the bus blew up.

"This young guy kept diving into this bag or whatever he had in front of his feet," Richard Jones told The Associated Press.

"He must have done that at least every minute if not every 30 seconds. He was getting annoyed, the only reason I noticed it was that he was annoying me," said Jones.

Police said they were investigating the possibility that the four men who attacked the bus and three London subways were suicide bombers. They said personal property belonging to one of the men, believed to be from West Yorkshire, in northern England, was found in the wreckage of the bus. That man's family called police to report him missing about 12 hours after the explosion, police said.

Jones, a 61-year-old computer consultant from Bracknell, west of London, said he didn't know if what he saw was significant, but said he had reported it to police. He described the man as being about 6-feet tall, olive-skinned and clean-shaven, wearing tight, light brown trousers and a light brown top.

The No. 30 bus was stuck in heavy traffic in Tavistock Square, in the famously literary Bloomsbury neighborhood, on Thursday morning, and Jones said he decided to join a fellow passenger who said he was going to walk instead.

"We banged the back of the bus and the driver then let us off," he said, adding that between 12 and 20 others had joined them. "Immediately, bang, there was an explosion behind me and I turned round and said 'I can't believe it, I just got off that bus'."

"What I did hear just before the explosion was an excruciating scream ... a crazy scream," he said. He could not tell whether the voice was male or female.

The explosion on the bus at 9:47 a.m. killed 13 people. It was about a mile from King's Cross station, where police said the suspects had been caught on closed circuit television just before 8:30 a.m.

Jones said a woman on the street asked him if he had just gotten off the destroyed bus. When he said yes, "she actually knelt down in front of me and prayed," he recalled.

He said he hadn't been too shaken by the experience.

"I felt a huge adrenaline rush and then I quickly rationalized it to very much like stepping off the pavement (sidewalk) and almost getting run down by a car, and then stepping back on the pavement and life goes on."

Scotland yard said they were british citizens and then an hour later yahoo is still saying "bomber identities unknown". Don't trust yahoo, they don't have newsreporters, they just scavage for news from other sites.
