Mushrooms growing in AZ, outdoor, 114 degrees, RH 10-20% (pics)
    #4399125 - 07/13/05 09:05 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

For those of you who wonder how hardy mycelium is...check this out.

About ten days ago, AFOAF dumped a 8x12x4" spent poo casing outside and buried it under about 1/2" of plain ol' arizona dirt. Two days ago, AFOAF dumped out half a bag of peat moss that had become overgrown with green mold and insect eggs on top of where the case was buried.

Every day or two days, AFOAF waters flowers with his son, and the area gets flooded pretty well.

However, this person knew that it wouldn't grow, because myc dies at 106 F, right? Well, the temps here have been consistently above 106, and yesterday it was up to 114!

Well this morning, when watering, my friend couldn't believe when he saw these...

The case was Argentinas...this friend wants to clone them and grow a few generations to create an "arizona" strain lol...just kidding lol.

There are a total of 5 pins seen. Sorry that the pictures aren't the greatest...but the pins are BARELY just sticking up and the friend didn't want to disturb them by brushing the dirt off the top of them.

You wouldn't think that it could work being that the mycelium is probably generating it's own heat too while it grows in addition to that AZ heat. Did you draw those green circles, or is that some kind of mold? I've been throwing my spent cakes, poo, casings in a pile outside of my apt in some bushes and see mushies popping up here and there. Mother nature knows best!

yeah it's in a shaded area, so maybe that's why.

Yeah, looked like some of that solar mold I've read about in Stamets. Grows in circles just like that.

Damn, that's awesome! I hope they mature, but once they get bigger they will need to be looked after more. I'll bet the moist ground helps out the myc, but above ground that heat and dryness might be too much. A shade cloth might help, if they wanted to put that much effort into it.
115 degrees! That is hot, son.  :shineon:

Yeah hehe! hot hot hot

They are right up against a wall on the non-sun side, so they don't ever get direct sunlight...maybe I'll mist them later today. I just don't want them to rot...but I'm sure any water that gathers on the caps will just dry up...

I think just keeping the ground around them moist and letting Our Mother do her thing is best.

Definatly keep it moist, do not worry about getting anything to wet in those conditions...as you said it will dry up QUICKLY...in this case here you want to wet, over to dry..

Yeah, I'm kidding. The first time I looked at the thumbnails, I didn't blow them up to get a good look at them. All I saw was the green and didn't really pay close attention to it. There is no "solar mold" in Stamet's book in case anyone was going crazy trying to find it in there LOL.

Hi! I'm also growing "mushrooms from hell". Here temps are 80-90F. I have air conditioner so in the afternoon they are about 78-80.

Sometimes I also use an iced bottle of water.

Here are some shrooms (GT) 3 days after birth:

Good luck!

Hmmm...well my air conditioner is set to 76, and the FC is right under the vent, so it gets down to 71-72 in there, and the incubator is fine, it gets up to 86 inside  I have thermometers so I know the temps are correct.

My first grow here was fine, a decent success. Not a big one though, just like 22 dry grams out of a couple caseings. I didn't put enough water in the cases though, and the sub layer was very thin. It was my first grow.

whatst he RH outside, i would think that the humidity would be more of an issue then the temp, since cubies grow in other hot partso ft he world like s american or thailiand or in southeast asia.
