Straw Casing
    #4398121 - 07/12/05 11:16 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Lots of people here will say.

A.)Contams to much
B.)Not worth it do to nutes
C.):blah:

But I like straw. When spawned with wbs, it's done wonderfully - For me.

I've encounted one problem so far that might make me start hunting for poo more...

After every flush...I've got quite a bit of abhorts..Which is normal.......But when dealing with straw....It's hard to pick off mushrooms and not mess up the caing (divets and such)...So I end up making holes here and there and then it's time to pick abhorts...lol...

So I was trying to devise a way to make it easier to pick off the mushrooms/abhorts easy-er..

So here's what I came up with...

Spawn your straw and Wbs....THEN put a thin layer of sub. on top........:smirk:

but then the substrate will fall through. I could still see any disturbance to the substrate and casing making sink holes....Almost like the movie Dune is in your Martha launching sand missiles into your casing layer....I hate that to it turns a very good looking casing layer into a ugly uneven one.

My point was that Straw comes apart more easily then something like brf...or striaght grains...

Mainly because it has pockets...kinda lol

But it's probably because I don't chop my straw up...

I'm just such a badass

If I'm following your right, it seems you are suggesting to put a small layer of substrate on top of the spawned straw; grain or brf.

What you need is a normal, non-nutritive casing layer.
Unlike pasteurized straw, grain and brf do not have beneficial bacteria to help fight off competitors. These type of substrates generally have to be sterilized in order to produce healthy cultures. Grain and brf is quickly overrun by contamination.

A well formulated casing layer will solve your problem.

I'm no noob acidblue :smirk:

Casing layers are suppose to be non-nutey and airy...lol

I'm saying the the sub. on top needs to be more...fuck...how do i put this...BTF like...instead of having stringy straw that isn't together well i guess you'd say...

Then case it as normal...Plus it's good for keep out contams as it colonizes.

Scatman i've read in some of his posts does that as well...

But i'm doing it for the purpose of having difficulties with straw ripping out...This should help with that.

yes exactly, non nute

I misunderstood your post, it seemed like your were suggesting to 'put a thin layer of substrate on top'.

I would still suggest you experiment with your casing layer. I have been using straw frequently. coir/verm. i dont have the straw ripping problem you do.

Well...I get fat mushies and plenty of..

It's nothing to do w/ sub. depth or casing depth.

I SHOULD cut my straw...That way it'd be more...packed and not so easily torn to shit when I pick my babies off...

But I have a shitload of straw and there's no way i'm cutting all that shit :smirk:

So instead I figured I could just put a layer of sub. on the straw (spawn w/e)....that way it'd be way less work and it'd still work as well as cutting the straw...

Gnostic, there's a garden store two blocks from my house that sells chopped straw.. Have you tried to find already chopped straw??
