bulgur wheat q
    #4397481 - 07/12/05 08:05 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Wholefoods is awesome, except that the bulgur wheat they have isnt flour at all, its like small grains(but not a grain). is this how its supposed to be? if not, will mixing with some BRF make for a decent substrate?

Bulgur comes from wheat kernels that are par-boiled (partially cooked by boiling or steaming) then dried and cracked. Because bulgur is partially cooked, while simple cracked wheat is not, bulgur wheat is fast-cooking and has an extended shelf-life. As a result the hull is weak and broken and it will leak its nutrients all over the place after pressure cooking, raising the chances of contamination and slowing colonization. The beauty of whole grains are that they are relatively dry on the outside and have large spaces between them. That makes it hard for bacteria to get to the goods inside and allows for ample air between the grains. Bulgur doesn't have these key properties. Stick with rye grain, millet, or wild bird seed. I like pure wild bird seed or rye and wild bird seed with a touch (0.5%) of black mustard seed for the extra oils.

while WBS will be attempted, its nice to hear that the bulgur wasnt PC'd :P. laziness rules the day and nuking is gaining its place in sterilization. ill let u know if it works out or not as these grain type bulgur wheat things turn out. thanks for replying when no one else did. +5!

It might work. If you want to up the chances a WHOLE bunch mix it with an equal amount of vermiculite. The vermiculite seems to keep the moisture under control better, prevents those dangerous starchy wet spots that bacteria just love in the spawn jars, and releases its moisture when it's needed during the fruiting. You get a better crop using it in many cases.

awesome, will do. the way it was done was with about a quarter bulgur, a quarter brf, and half verm. seemed reasonable, will let u know the results. i have heard bulgur gives potency, but personally, i wouldnt know the difference anyway.

Depends on what theory you believe it.

Bulgar wheat contains 6x the amount of trophans as rye...

I'd use it as a kicker...But wouldnt personally use it as a pure substrate....

I'd add a teaspoon or two to every quart..

And nuking isn't really gaining a place anywhere IMO.

Just b/c something begins to get used more, doesn't make it better.

i wasnt implying it was better, its that not being able to use one doesnt make it impossible to do this like everyone says it is.
