Calcium Carbonate found at Petco...is this okay to use?
    #4398256 - 07/12/05 11:58 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

From what I've read, instead of hydrated lime, calcium carbonate is better to use in a 50/50 case mix as there is no chance to burn the mycelium.

How does this stuff look? It is labeled as "calcium carbonate" and used for reptiles.

It was dyed with a non-toxic dye it says if you read the back, just for identification and to blend with whatever color sand you use. They had red, black, brown, yellow, etc.

It looks ok, but I'd rather get pulvarized limestone, even more of a powder, and 2 bucks for 50 pounds. It should work I guess though...

Where do you get pulverized limestone?

Kalix, buffers are a good idea and can help the pin set. I think the 50/50 recipe mixes too high pH even using calcium carbonate (and it's way, way, way too high using hydrated lime). I use a Pinpoint pH meter accurate to .01 and calibrated before each use with a dual buffer system. Depending on the fineness of the flour, I can tell you that you don't need more than about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of calcium carbonate to get to the 7.5 range (he recommends like 1.2 cups). I use about 1/4 cup pure calcium carbonate super fine flour with 2 cups of aragonite (crushed coral) to get to the 7.2 range.

Thanks for the recipe! My current experiment is Cambo fruited invitro in a Cookie jar off H-poo with no casing at all, just because I've never done it, but I got a 3 Quarts Texas colonizing, and I'll have to try that casing mix..

Actually now that I think of it, I think I used four cups of crushed coral. Just use whatever is in the recipe but reduce the calcium carbonate flour or pulverized limestone to 1/2 cup to 1/4 cup. If it feels more like the consistency of corn flour, use a 1/2 cup. If it feels more the consistency of sifted white flour, use about 1/4th cup.
