Cutting holes in Rubbermaid
    #4397010 - 07/12/05 08:04 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

How do you guys cut holes in the thick rubbermaids?  The clear plastic kind.  The normal cheap plastic containers are easy with exactoknife/razor blades/scissors but I already cracked a container for myglovebox using these tools :frown:.  Plus it is taking me FOREVER.  I don't have any power tools :frown:

Use a blow dryer to soften the plastic first. Shattering plastic is no fun, better to do it right.

the easy way...

or you can score the plastic 3 or 4 times, it's best to make a template for doing
it and simply tape it to the box, after you score it on the outside it should be
easy to knock out with a sharp blow from the handle of a screwdriver, most people
break them because they are trying to cut all the way through all at once.

another wise choice, I have one for my router that goes to 72", a little pointless for a rubbermade... I hadda upgrade my dremel because I'm too hard on them....

I replaced a soldering iron bit with an allen wrench piece. used it like a saw... melted right through it.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I ended up using a regular ole soldering iron and it took a long time but luckily I have TV. Dremel sounds like an excellent idea for next time.

I just use a jigsaw, as long as u have the plastic resting on something so its not jumpin up and down its pretty hard to make it shatter. I drill a lil hole first with a standard drill to get the blade in and then away u go.
