2001: A Space Odyssey: A Torturing test of patience and discipline
    #4394637 - 07/12/05 03:00 AM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Oh my god. This movie is what my nightmares are made of. Makes no sense at all. EXTREMELY slow. It continually grows to a climax without ever reaching one. I felt the entire thing slowly drawing me to the edge of my sanity and leaving me there.

Strangely enough, one of my favorite movies/book series of all time. Try reading the 3 book series by Arthur C. Clarke, the plot is actually somewhat resolved.

Hmm

I watched 2001 a couple of weeks ago, just me, a microphone hooked up to a video recorder (so I could record continuously for 6 hours, LP), 6 dry grams of philosopher stone truffles mixed with 4.5g of cambodian cubenis, a bunch of mix tapes of the best 60s/70s psychedelic music and the 2001 DVD.

Best solo flight I've ever had - all of reality just bubbled away at one point.

...will post a report at some point. The commentary I do on the film is fucking hysterical!

And that shot of the eye towards the end of the film...that's one thirsty eye!

What's beautiful about 2001 is that Kubrick's entire philosophy that led to his interest in making the film is summed up in that one gorgeous shot early in the film. A bone, used as a weapon to bludgeon and destroy, clutched like the key to reality itself, is tossed up into the sky triumphantly. And in a jump-cut, we see a humongous spaceship thousands and thousands years in the future. And immediately we understand, it's like nothing has changed...all our tools, all our technology, all our innovations...we are still just monkeys in the wild trying to find our way...

Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.
