decaying bolete?
    #4390646 - 07/10/05 07:28 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I came across this yesterday, and found it so freaky looking that I did not want to pull it apart.

But later in the day I found a similar mushrooms--seemed to be boletus fraternus judging by the coloration of the stalk of a specimen nearby. (Apart from the red decaying one visible.)

My question is this: Have you seen this before? Does it only occur with boletes?

Boletes often get attacked by this mold. I'm not sure of the exact species of mold, but it destroys boletes (mostly chestnut boletes it seems like) when the ground is soggy.

That looks similar to Hypomyces chrysospermus (there are a few *very* similar species), a parasitic fungus that takes boletes over.

Nice specimens.

Happy mushrooming!
