jaja local nursery is where its at.....milllet, gypsum, all that good stuffs

Haha lol thanks for the contributions everyone - greatly valued. About the finch seed its dirt cheap over here about ?1 for 4litres so i may also give that a try

he doesn't say it SUCKS as a substrate though.
Anyway. I'm trying it now since I found it cheap at the local gardening store.

If I use rye do I have to throw in vrmiculite too, don't I?

No
If you mean Rye as a grain then Vermiculite is not needed in the substrate. Just Rye or Rye&Millet/WBS. Some do add small amounts of Vermiculite to help soak some of the water up.

Sorry. Yea I know what ya mean.
I just interpreted him as saying he likes to use Millet as a substrate to spawn with, but not as a substrate alone for fruiting. Rye does better at that.

Wrong..whole grains do not use a verm barrier. Only them cake things put verm at the top of the jar.
I do still suggest adding verm to rye, just less then you add to WBS..
