casing method?
    #4391573 - 07/11/05 05:37 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

i cased two dunked cakes following a method from the website. all it called for was perlite on the bottom of the container and damp vermiculate on the top. is this a good way to go or is there a more effective, higher yielding way of doing this? i am a first timer so any info is much appreciated.

perlite is used for humidity, the vermiculite will hold water but provide no nutrients. As for a more effective casing method, look at poo, worm casings, mushroom compost, all will work real well

I know what the substances are used for. I just had no access to anything but the vericulite i already had so i was wondering if the method that i was using would suffice. i have heard a lot of good things about bulk growth on straw. a buddy of mine grew very large quantities on straw and WBS casing. those were also very potent. half an eighth and i was totally fucked up.

BetaDelta- please keep false info to yourself. If you had any idea what you were talking about you would not tell him to use any of those things for casings. The idea with a casing is to use a non-nutritious substance such as peat moss or vermiculite or a mixture of quite a few. If you were to use horse poo the myc would simply colonize the layer and then fruit without a casing layer.

Your best bet if you can only find vermiculite is to just roll your cakes with it. Then spray it so its moist. Never use something with nutrients in it for casing.

Yes Verm is fine if thats what you have, add some peat or coir if you can. The yield will depend more on the substrate you've chosen. Don't make the casing too thick either, generally 1/4 substrate depth, but never more than 2 inches.
