Spray paint alternatives?
    #4390488 - 07/10/05 06:33 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Long story short, I am unable to find a solid colored storage container with a clear lid, so now I have one that is all clear. I want to make the container a solid color, but I don't want to use spray paint. Any ideas?

For those who have sprayed their terrarium: what was your experience with that? I feel like the spary paint inside the terrarium will create a harmful smell which will definitely damage the shrooms. If sprayed on the outside, it's unreliable. Although a possible solution is to coat it with polyuerathane.

I think he/she was talking about a FC agar, not a casing container.

I sprayed the outside of my terrarium with black paint. To become completely opaque it needed 4-5 coats. It worked really well, no complaints.

Duct tape aluminum foil to the outside - then.

Painting one is a PITA.

spray paint works on the outside.....get some primer....primer it up, then spray it black. Worked well for me

What, pray tell, is PITA? Something tells me we're not talking about bread.

Look around at Lowes or Home Depot for this stuff called "construction grade plastic sheeting". I picked up a roll in black, and it's been a blessing. Light can't penetrate a single layer; ultra thick heavy duty stuff. Cut to size and use on anything: fruiting chamber, clear fruiting trays, anything. All that's needed is a few pieces of well placed duct tape.

No more fussing w/ aluminum foil or paint that chips and falls off.

Thanks a bunch for all the suggestions. I'll have a look-see on the plastic sheeting. Hopefully it's not expensive...

If you can't find the good stuff, just look for a heavy painter's plastic roll. Mine is made by Film-Gard, and if I remember correctly it ran $80 for 50', so it's not too cheap. Good luck.

If you could tape it flush with the sides of whatever container without light getting in through the cracks of the gap, then sure.  But if I remember right solar blankets are pretty thick and bumpy, therefore it could be a chore to get one totally flush with a container.

The ones I got as a substitute for mylar from WM are about as thick as aluminum foil. Instead of stapeling it in place where I'm using it, I just used headliner spray adhesive from an auto parts store to hold it in place, then trimmed the excess.

I've had good luck with Krylon Fusion. Light coats until opaque, let it cure/dry and air out a few days. Sparaying the exterior would be best, IMO.
