Chanterelles!!
    #4390195 - 07/10/05 06:36 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

They are in full force here in N-GA. I came back with about 8 pounds today and I left a ton behind for tomorrow. Get this, I ran out of room in my bag and had to leave!!! Sorry guys, no pictures, but I found the best patch ever today, a circle about 20 feet across just full out flushing these orange mushrooms. I spotted it from a mile away it seemed.
Anyways, I just got done eating fresh pan fried stripped bass, with fresh chanterlelles seared lightly with salt... OH HELL YES! If you are in Georgia, get out there asap.
Oh ya, make sure to discard any stems that have lots of holes in them, because it is bugs in there.. Some people don't mind but I cut out the  spots with bugs.
have fun.
:sun:

oops, I lied. IT was only 6 and a half pounds.. I double checked it on my kitchen scale... Tomorrow I am going to sell a few pounds to a local restaurant to make up for some gas money. And of course I'm going to eat a lot more of them

Can anyone comment on the nutritional value of chanterelles?

Nice man. Damn i cant wait to get back to GA and go hunting.

Chanterelles are probably good for weight loss or something, but i dont think they have any health benefits.

Sure should, with this rain over N-GA. I left a ton behind, I hope they do not get too waterlogged overnight and some new ones can mature.

Oak forests, more generally. American Beech in the North

There is a good population of Chantrelles at the fort near Winder, GA. Last year I went to pick weillis, found a few, but my finds paled in comparison to the full pound of chanties I found not yards from my campsite. Also found lobster mushrooms there.

I find my chanterelles near beech, but also in scrubby pine and oak along with black trumpets.

Chanterelles are in the middle of mushrooms nutritionally. They contain:

91% water when fresh
22% protein (dry)
5% fat (dry)
65% carbohydrates (dry)
11% fiber (dry)
350 kcal per 100g dry

Happy mushrooming!

Actually Chanterelles are one of the best sources of usable protein second only to the egg in it's balance of essential amino acids. In additon they are good for any skin disorder.

No problem you guys. Actually most edible mushrooms have a wealth of medicinal benefits. I aquired that information from a book titled Medicinal Mushrooms. It's a great book and you should check it out.

Hell ya man.. Just got back from the park, with this rain we got in GA last night, the chants were popping up again!!!(third flush in 5 day)
I picked about 4 more pounds of very nice specimens. I can't wait to eat them... I sold the ones from yesterday to a local restaurant here in the city.

Thats just gross man. You should see a dermatologist about that...

And it's Amanita, like Ah-MAH-nee-Tah, not, Ah-muh-NEE-tuh. Although it doesn't really matter sinse Latin is a dead language.

Sorry, I'm not trying to flame you or anything, im just a grammar freak sometimes...
